Onomichi is the starting point for the Shimanami Kaido Expressway on the main island of Japan.

5 minutes from JR Onomichi Station there is a hotel that is built from renovating a historic port warehouse.

Inside the multi-purpose facility Onomichi U2 is a hotel where you can take your bicycle into your room the “Hotel Cycle”.

Suffice it to say there is everything here for a cyclist, yet the interior is kept chic and classy and one night here will get you hooked.

Let’s take a closer look shall we?

With your bicycle

If you come to a hotel on a bicycle most likely they will force you to keep it outside.

This hotel though was made for cyclists, and you can even ride up to the front desk. After a exhilarating cycle ride you can check in with your trusty set of wheels.

You can even take it into the room!

There is a cycle hanger on the wall for you to let your bicycle rest with you (not all rooms).

Also, in the public space there is a wide open repair space for you to do any needed maintenance on your ride.

An interior like a vacation home

Being able to bring your bike inside isn’t the only thing great here.

With the bathroom near the window, the room feels like a designer vacation home.

The spacious bathroom, a cool concrete desk, and amenities such as using high end Imabari towels. You might try to convince yourself to live here even.

Two breakfasts to choose from

Breakfast is served at the simply named The Restaurant, with the menu focused on fresh baked breads from the bakery shop also in the hotel.

There are two ways to go here, Bakery Buffet (1500 JPY+tax), or the Morning Set (700 JPY+tax).

The Bakery Buffet is a bread and salad buffet, that also features omelets, fried eggs, which they make fresh each time you order, as well as juice and coffee or tea.

This bakery buffet is what you get when you choose a guest package that includes breakfast.

Pictured above is the Morning Set, a simple mea of salad, bread and coffee or tea. Although it isn’t a buffet it is quite a lot of food with 5 different breads.

Even if you haven’t chosen a guest plan that includes breakfast you can order it in the morning. This makes it convenient or you to choose based on how you feel in the morning.

The start of a stamp rally!

Because this is a hotel made with cyclists in mind there is a guest plan called the “Ride the Shimanami Kaido Expressway Beginner Cycling Plan” where you get a stamp rally card to visit all the local sights and collect stamps to complete the course. (This plan is actually more reasonably priced than any others)

This was my first time so I rode the beginner course. The 2 check point course of Mukaishima and Innoshima islands is open between 8-29-2014 and 10-31-2014.

For those that participate you will have a chance to win prizes from Onomichi U2 or the Giant Store from a prize draw. The first 3000 participants will get a small token of participation.

I wonder what kind of plan or stamp rally they will come up with next. For details please check the links for the hotel, or the Onomichi U2 websites.

The rental system is awesome too

You receive a stamp card even before checking in so you can head out right away!

Riding in the clean air on the ocean side roads and bridges, will definitely take any daily stresses away.

There are also rental cycle systems in place on the Shimanami Kaido Expressway, but you can rent from the Giant Store inside the hotel.

As you tell them your height and other dimensions when making the reservation they will set the seat height to match you. They also explain how to operate the gear and brake system if you aren’t sure so no worries there.

Also, at Imabari Station on the other side of the bridge there is a Giant Store as well so you can ride it there and leave it with them to take the train back (only limited amount of bikes and there is an extra charge for leaving it there).

In closing

Although it is a hotel made with cyclists in mind, even if you don’t ride it still is a great place to stay.

Another great point here is that the checkout time is a leisurly noon checkout.

It is definitely worth coming here whether you ride or not. What are you waiting for?
