Palolem is reputable as Goa’s most remote and quiet beach. This esteemed standing over the years has garnered an almost mythical quality to it, drawing in more and more tourists every year which has created a tourism boom recently. The recent accommodations that have popped up and are now dotted along the beach are a great representation of that. With huts on stilts, facing the ocean, these places seem like the perfect choice until you get the prices of them coupled with the lack of amenities on offer. A hundred metres in, by the far end of the beach next to a village lies a well-known hostel amongst Indian locals: Palolem Tree House. A hidden hole-in-the-wall option, it offers everything you could want from any of the other accommodations (and more) at a cheaper cost due to its location. It’s a guaranteed good time here.

The location is beachfront without the commotion

Though understandably hard to get to through the mess of trees that surround the hostel on every side, ask a local from the village and they’re more than likely to guide you to a reception desk that doubles as the bar. Make your way through the sand - that’s how close it is to the beach! - and on to the bar/reception desk/dining room. Literally about ten metres (32 feet) in from the beach, Palolem Tree House is also found on the far end of the beach, away from the main section of it. The commotion and bustling noise of the beach during the day is far away and the partying at night can’t be heard from inside the compound. A hundred metres (320 feet) away from the entrance to Monkey Island as well, this ideal location gives one the opportunity to go hiking in the early morning if need be.

Each chalet is spacious but basic

The rooms at Palolem Tree House are quite basic but they ensure you’re safe from all weather conditions. Made out of recycled materials from the surrounding villages, all the rooms are quite spacious and feature a verandah in front. Along with a bathroom and a bed draped in a mosquito net, the rooms’ amenities are basic but you’re not likely to spend a lot of time inside of it. There are no variety of rooms but rather all cost 800 INR (12 USD) and are labelled as chalets. Each room has its own private bathroom and comes with free toiletries and slippers.

The restaurant and bar go well with the free pool table

Featuring free Wi-Fi throughout the property that’s reliable and fast, Palolem Tree House offers a host of free amenities. Along with a pool table one can use for free 24/7, the establishment also offers bar tabs and a restaurant serving everything from delicious Goan cuisine to Western breakfasts and Chinese delights. A huge breakfast with coffee included is 200 INR (3 USD), a steal in Palolem. With a 24/7 reception, the establishment also offers barbecue facilities and has a nightly movie that plays on a massive projector as the dinner crowd gathers.

Palolem Tree House's charm lies in its staff

Palolem Tree House is Palolem’s most underrated guesthouse. Though off the beaten path, it’s surprisingly not far from any of the main activities and one can find its location quite manageable. The staff are super friendly, ensuring they know your name from the minute you walk in and as they’re accessible 24/7 when they give you their personal numbers, you feel safe and secure in their hands. They’ll also help you out with any further booking or rental of scooters. It’s not the most well-known establishment but that’s what entices most travellers to stay there, plus you never know who you’ll meet at the Palolem Tree House.
