Ever wonder what happiness tastes like?  It’s a sensation that invigorates liveliness of the body, mind, and spirit.  Happiness comes in many forms.  It’s sweet and savory, hot and cold, food and drink.  One of the many places to indulge in glorious scrumptious happiness rests off the corner of Wall St. in a little place north of San Diego called Puesto.

Walking the beautiful boardwalk of La Jolla will work up any appetite and while you’ll have to resist the many seaside restaurants with exquisite views you’ll be thankful for venturing away from the usual flow of sun baked tourists and privileged locals. Yes, those burger pubs and steak houses are delicious but if you’re in San Diego for any reason it better include tacos.

From garden to urban

Upon entry there are many reasons to lose interest of all those previous surrounding competitors banking on your soft side for the seascape. Colorful urban décor, relaxed boardshorts-welcome environment, bar, and a clear sight of everything in the fridge greet you better than any hostess making decent living reeling in customers under the Californian sun.

While most places keep the cold dank fridge far from the consumer’s table, Puesto lays everything out like a winning hand. You see the greens of the produce complete with red tomatoes, purple onions, and mounds of citric fruits waiting to be picked and pulled for your lunch and/or dinner. It’s a statement that your taco begins with fresh and served the way the Holy Mother intended: from the earth for the earth.

Taste of happiness

If you’re having newfound tourist dumbness like I did when I first walked through the doors, the filet mignon with crusted cheese, avocado, and pistachio jalapeño will wake the carnivorous dead. If your hippie inclinations lead you to the zucchini and cactus veggie, you won’t go wrong as I’ve also happily devoured those tacos from my wife’s plate.

But if you’re in San Diego you’re going to have to put a little sea life on your plate. It’s like not eating any brisket here in Texas. The blood orange beer battered wild cod taco is a shark among minnows and the octopus taco with avocados and chipotle crema on a blue corn tortilla looks like the spirit of the sea on your plate.

Raise a glass

Be sure to treat yourself to a one of a kind traditional red michelada with their own signature spicy tomato blend and Pacifico or El Rey Del Patio made with charred chilies, cucumber, and tomatillos with a Corona Lite. I’ve looked all around Texas and Cali and have yet to find anything that comes close in taste.

Come humble and hungry

With much of the menu an astonishing assortment of guilt free gluten free items, Puesto is perfect for the mind and body. In a world lost in nutritional ambiguity, Puesto redefines the purpose of humble “street” food through the art of Mexican cuisine and the elegance of urban culture.
