Do you ever dream of going to a hot spring - not just a public bath, but a real good-quality hot spring? Moreover, do you prefer to do that at a small and easy to reach inn and avoid staying at expensive ryokan inns where you can’t eat all of the abundant dinner? If your answer is positive, then I recommend Yugawara Onsen’s “Yukkuri” hot spring inn. Let me introduce this small inn with a naturally flowing hot spring!

Tanuki raccoon dogs welcome you

Yugawara Onsen is nestled between Hakone and Atami, two of Japan’s best hot spring resorts. Take the local bus to Oku-Yugawara and Fudotaki from JR Yugawara Station and get off after about 10 minutes at Onsenba-chuo bus stop. Yukkuri hot spring inn will be right in front of you.

Many tanuki raccoon dogs made of Shigaraki ware will welcome you at the entrance. The legend says that long ago this hot spring was discovered by a raccoon dog. You’ll find them even inside the inn.

Yukkuri has only 8 guest rooms. Parties and big celebrations are not allowed so the inn is quiet and you can spend a relaxed time here.

The room reminds you of the nostalgic Showa period

The guest room is filled with the nostalgic Showa period atmosphere, but it’s very clean and pleasant. There is no special service, so you can prepare the futon for bed yourself and not be disturbed by anyone. The toilets and washing rooms are shared, but clean, renovated and safe to use.

You can eat dinner out, or you can buy something from the convenience store in front of the station and use the fridges and microwave ovens placed on every floor. The convenience store is a bit far, so you better buy things before you arrive at the inn.

Great quality freely-flowing hot spring

There are two hot springs in the inn and men and women change shifts to use them in the mornings and the evenings. Both use freely-flowing hot spring water coming directly from the grounds of this inn. The water is rather hot, so they adjust the temperature by regulating the flow or installing fans. No additional water is added no matter what. Therefore the temperature is always pleasant whenever you decide to enter the hot spring.

In general you can enter between 3 pm and 12 am for an evening bath, and between 6 am and 10 am for a morning bath. The check-out is until 12 pm so you can rest in your room after the morning bath.

There is a ping-pong table and a manga corner next to the hot spring, so you can spend some leisurely free time in-between soaking in the water.

The breakfast is very delicious

I recommend paying additionally for breakfast. You can choose the set menu when you check-in. Be sure to do try the breakfast if you have enough time. Choose between a jack mackerel set or a salmon set. You can have a bowl of very delicious white bait with either of the set menus.

The dining room is next to the entrance, and you can eat as much rice and miso soup as you want – it’s on self-service. On the photo you can see the bowl of white bait, but the main dishes are salmon and dried food. Everything goes well with rice so you might even overeat.

Conclusion

This inn has very good reviews from travel websites. The price for a single guest on a weekday is just around 5000 JPY which is quite reasonable. Enjoy the freely flowing hot spring and the delicious breakfast and spend a relaxed time at Yukkuri inn!
