There are relatively fewer hotels to choose from in Banjarmasin, the capital city of South Kalimantan, Indonesia, and not many of them offer 4-star luxury. In Indonesia, 4 and 5-star hotels are easily found in Java and Bali, and you may not have thought you could find a 4-star hotel in this city of Kalimantan Island. Surprisingly, there are a few 4-star hotels in the area, and Rattan Inn is one of the town’s favorites.

Comfy hotel free from the city noise
Banjarmasin is not only hot and humid most of the time, but it is also a crowded city with rather chaotic traffic during the day. So whatever your reason is for being in this city, it’s best if you can find a well-air-conditioned hotel that is tranquil and free from city noises: just like what you will experience in this hotel.
Even though this hotel is located on one of the major roads in Banjarmasin, where a lot of noisy motor vehicles pass by throughout the day and night, you’ll in fact, be delighted to find that this hotel is serene. The hotel buildings are separated from the street by a big parking lot, hence you won’t hear any street noise from the lobby and the areas behind it. As you enter the lobby, you will feel as if you are not in Banjarmasin, but in a serene location away from the city.
Peaceful setting
This is a 4-star hotel, so you will get all the facilities like other hotels of the same rating would offer, such as good air conditioning (Banjarmasin is steamy, so trust me you will need the good ones!) and free Wi-Fi. However, this hotel offers you more than that. This hotel is really secluded from the outside world. There is a swimming pool at the back with palm trees around the pool where you can swim and relax on one of the lazy chairs. You’ll also find in the middle of the hotel’s 4-story building an open space with a small garden and a koi fishpond that’s perfect for listening to the sound of water made by the mini fountain in the middle of the pond. Isn’t this what you really want from a hotel in Banjarmasin?
Sunset, fragrances, and a pool view from your room
Like other 4-star hotels, besides the Wi-Fi, the amenities include international TV channels, a hot shower, and complimentary toiletries, There are more than 50 rooms in the hotel’s 4-story building, with the rates starting from 1,200,000 IDR (87 USD) for a superior room. No mountain can be seen from this city, so the best view would be the swimming pool. I suggest you choose the one facing the pool. The good news is most rooms have windows facing west, so if you stay on the 3rd or 4th floor, you can enjoy the sunset from your room. Also, if you like fragrances, stay on the 3rd floor, as this floor has a spa where you can smell the sweet fragrant scent continuously coming out from inside the spa.
Lavish breakfast
You will have a lavish breakfast buffet in Milos restaurant, included in the rates. The buffet has a variety of Asian and local foods, including ‘soto Banjar’. Soto is the yellow chicken soup, but unlike soto in Java, they also add a little cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg in the soup, making it a bit sweet and fragrant. Also, don’t miss one of the most popular cakes in Kalimantan, the sweet and aromatic cake named 'Kue Bingka’. Another specialty is the chicken fried rice. It’s just fried rice, so you may be wondering what is so special about the fried rice here? The flavor may be just the same as other delicious fried rice you find elsewhere, but in here you actually get to see the chef cooking the fried rice, and smell the mouth-watering fragrances from the smoke coming out from the wok! Also, you wouldn’t believe that you can find sushi among the many items on the buffet!
Wake up early for the floating market
After your good night sleep, get up early in the morning and ask the hotel driver to drive you to the city’s Barito River to visit the floating market named Lok Baintan (you need to book the driver in advance). The market is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel, and as you get here, you will see many boats loaded with fresh fruits, vegetables, and cakes with the sellers onboard. It’s good to get here before 5.30am local time as you will also be able to see the sunrise from the river. So now you know that besides having all these comfortable amenities, this hotel is also pretty close to the most popular floating market in Indonesia. This hotel is truly one of the best choices to stay at while you are here in Banjarmasin!
