Eat up a brown sugar lunch at Kokuto Sabou!

Brown Sugar in Japanese is known as “kokuto”. Thus, Kokuto Sabou is translated as Brown Sugar Café. Everything provided at this café has brown sugar in it, whether that be food, drink, or dessert. The picture above is an item from the lunch menu: brown sugar and ginger curry with a lot of grilled vegetables. Unlike other curry it has brown sugar and ginger in it, making the digestive system more active, and thus stimulating the appetite. With two mini salads on the side this lunch menu is fulfilling and healthy! The rice is mixed with 18 grains and plenty of seasonal vegetables which are balanced well with the brown sugar and ginger curry.

Relax with a cup of tea and some brown sugar

The lunch menu comes with a drink of your choice. In this picture, you see the tea of the day accompanied by the brown sugar of the week. The tea of the day on this particular day was shiso tea, (perilla beefsteak plant) tea. After having rich curry, the two pieces of sweet brown sugar provided along with this unsweetened simple tea add a nice finishing touch to your lunch that’s just right.

Aside from the tea of the day, you can also choose hot or cold coffee, mango juice, ginger ale and so on so if you want something sweet along with your curry or any other lunch menu item.

I was introduced to Kokuto Sabou through word of the mouth from the locals. I went to get my hair done at the nearby hair salon and I was recommended to have lunch at Kokuto Sabou. As a matter of fact, as well as the ladies at the hair salon, there were ladies from a nearby boutique that I also stopped by using the café, as I bumped into them having a quick business meeting at the same time that I visited myself.

Its relaxing atmosphere with wooden furniture and warm earthy decorations attract many locals. It is such a popular hangout place for lunch, tea, or for having a quick business meeting that customers quickly filled the empty seats soon after my arrival. It seems the café is more popular for women than men, but considering the time and the location, it is not surprising as I visited there on a weekday at lunch.
