Alleppey (commonly known as Alappuzha) is a gorgeous little sea-side town set in the backwaters of Southern India, in Kerala. Located an hour away from the nearest major city, the peace and solitude on offer here are a refreshing take on India’s usual helter-skelter. Sea Land, located on Alleppey beach itself, is the perfect accommodation to reflect the town’s seclusion. The hostel suits many needs: for those on a budget, for those looking for a quick stopover or for travellers who want to stay somewhere for the long term. The prices reflect the anonymity of Alleppey at the moment.

A location next to the beach is all you need

Located literally ten feet (3m) from the beach, Sea Land is located next to two other hostels and is the lesser known of the three, which makes it the perfect stop for a private, romantic getaway. With the beach so close, you’d be hard-pressed to not spend all your time there, especially with a gorgeous sunset every single day. Though it might be hard to find the place by yourself, Sea Land is well-known to rickshaw drivers and the locals, so feel free to ask if you’re a little lost in the town of Alleppey. Its location on Beach Road allows you easy access to several tourist cafes and local restaurants close by. If you want to stay for a long period of time and need groceries, there’s a local market (with unbeatable prices) a five-minute walk away.

The prices are hard to beat

The rooms at Sea Land are beautiful. It’s an old converted Kerala house which features five main rooms (11 to 18 USD each) upstairs with a view of the ocean. Each upstairs room has its own sitting area, and comes with two double beds. On the ground floor, you’ll find all the smaller, private rooms (6 USD) - some of which are air-conditioned, which costs $9. There is a common area in front of these rooms, where you can get the strongest Wi-Fi signal, which comes free. Each room has its own private shower and bathroom with a western toilet, complimentary soap and toilet paper. Double beds are a staple in each of the rooms, including the dormitories (7 to 15 USD) that make up the remainder of the hostel - the dorms have a shared shower and bathroom and are priced per bed.

Every tour can be arranged through the hostel

There is an array of activities available at this hostel. If you want to canoe, fish or just go for a stroll down the backwaters, the staff can arrange it for you at a moment’s notice. All staff speak English and with a 24-hour reception and shop, the hostel seems to have it all. There’s also free Wi-Fi and breakfast that can be included if you inform the staff in advance. The guest house also offers motorbike and scooter hires, if one feels the need to visit any of the other beaches or head to Kochi, the nearest major city, for the day. If the shop in the hostel doesn’t meet your requirements, there’s a convenience store right next door that sells everything from cigarettes to Western cereal. You’ll be surprised by what this place has to offer.

Don't miss out on the bargain prices

Alleppey is slowly becoming a hotspot amongst travellers. Word-of-mouth in Southern India is getting people excited about this hideaway destination. Ensure that you get here quickly and come stay at Sealand because the prices at the moment do not reflect all the available amenities plus the location. It’s a bargain most budget travellers thrive on and love.
