Just a 30-minute drive from Uthandi is Mahabalipuram, with a lovely beach that's known for its surf-friendly waves. I have tried it, and it's not my cup of tea. But those who are enthusiastic about it must not miss this opportunity to ride the waves. Just head to Mumu Surf School and sign up for a one-hour lesson to get a taste of it. Pro surfers can also rent surfboards from them. The school is run by local youth, and it's so much fun to see gangs of kids having the best time of their life riding the waves.
The sea here is great for swimming as well. The playful waves and the varying shore levels make this beach ideal for everyone. The best time to go for a swim is from 11am to 4 pm. Don't go too early in the morning, as the current is too strong at that time.
