Relatively few foreign tourists visit Thailand’s province of Phetchabun. Located in the lower north of the country, it is a fabulous place for nature lovers. Soaring mountains and rolling hills combined with lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, gushing rivers, and wildlife-rich national parks certainly offer plenty to do!

Khao Kho is one of Phetchabun’s prettiest mountains, with plenty of scenic viewpoints and lots of things to see and do. It is a popular destination with Thai tourists who are drawn to the natural beauty, refreshingly cooler temperatures, and interesting sights.

Be tempted by these six great Khao Koh attractions:

1. Chattanooga Coffee Shop

Sitting at the side of the road on the drive up Khao Kho, you’ll see a small coffee shop called Chattanooga. “What’s so special about a coffee shop?” you may ask … just check out the killer views! The small outdoor seating area is perched on a balcony that overlooks some of the area’s most verdant fields and forests, with other hills and mountains creating a stunning backdrop. It’s the perfect place to simply admire the vistas over an iced coffee, iced tea, or juice. The company also operates a small guesthouse, with rooms below the coffee shop and terrace.

2. The International Library

Apparently once home to a wide selection of interesting artifacts and books, the main library building is now, sadly, in quite a sorry state of repair. The few dusty books and damaged exhibits would probably make you feel more disheartened than excited … But, there’s another reason to pay a visit! Within the grounds of the International Library is a beautiful gleaming white pagoda, complete with golden Buddha images. Many flower beds are dotted throughout the grounds, which, when in bloom, would be really quite magical. There are no charges for this attraction.

3. Itthi Military Base / Weapon Museum

The area around Khao Kho was once the scene of violent skirmishes between the Royal Thai Army and Communist rebels. Previously a major army base, Itthi Military Base is today home to an assortment of artillery and weaponry that was used during the battles. There are reconstructed bunkers and planning rooms, giving even more of an understanding of the troubles that plagued this area up until the early 1980s. Admission is just 10 THB (approximately 0.30 USD) per person.

Continuing further up the mountain to the peak, you can visit the simple yet touching Khao Kho Sacrificial Monument. Made from shining marble, it is in a triangular shape to symbolize the cooperation between, and sacrifices of, military personnel, police officers, and civilians in protecting the area.

4. Chedi Phra Borommasaririkkathat (Buddha Relic Pagoda)

Also sometimes referred to as the Buddha Relic Pagoda, Chedi Phra Borommasaririkkathat is a tall and majestic white pagoda that was built to house sacred relics of the Lord Buddha. The relics were brought to Thailand from Sri Lanka. Impressive from the outside, visitors can also step inside where they will see an inner glass display with an eclectic selection of Buddha images and other religious memorabilia. There is also a large collection of clocks within the display!

A circular walkway leads around the curious display, with even more detailed statues around the outer edge. There are statues of famous monks from the area, figures from Thai legends and folklore, and Buddha statues in a variety of poses.

A special place for Thai people, you will see locals praying and making merit at the front of the main display. As with all revered Buddhist destinations, you should remove your shoes before going inside and make sure that you are dressed respectfully. The commonly accepted standard of dress is with your shoulders covered and no excessively short dresses, skirts, or shorts.

5. Admire the gorgeous views of the “Thai Alps”

There are several sign-posted viewpoints around Khao Kho where you can linger for a while just soaking up the splendid sweeping natural beauty all around. You’ll quickly understand how Khao Kho and surrounding areas were nicknamed the Thai Alps! Several resorts have taken full advantage of the environment and have been built in a style that imitates delightfully quaint mountain lodges in Switzerland.

6. Wat Pha Sorn Kaew

Perhaps amongst the most arresting and beguiling temples in all of Thailand, Wat Pha Sorn Kaew is a spectacular sight. Often surrounded by cloud and mist due to its lofty location, the atmosphere could best be described as ethereal.

A real jewel (quite literally) in the Khao Kho area, the dazzling Buddhist temple is decorated with colourful mosaic tiles, bright glass beads, and ornate pottery. Elaborate dinner plates, pots, and lids are set into the walls and you can climb the stunning stairs to get a closer view of the opulent temple as well as admiring even more amazing views.

Smaller surrounding buildings are decorated in a similar manner and you cannot help but be inspired by a tall white statue of five serenely attractive Buddha images in descending size order sitting in the mountains.

Are you hungry for even more Khao Kho fun?

Local roadside markets sell as enticing assortment of locally-grown produce and souvenirs and many of the resorts offer active adventures such as kayaking, rafting, climbing, and hiking. The Royal residence of Khao Kho Palace is home to a vibrant array of plants and flowers and visitors are free to enjoy the grounds when there are no members of the royal family in occupation. The medium-sized Si Dit Waterfall is a pleasant place to relax and enjoy the sight and sound of tinkling water. Arrange your visit to Khao Kho and enjoy a slice of raw beauty, far away from the international tourist crowds.
