Salzburg is commonly known as the place where the famous musician and composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, lived. It is also synonymously known as the home of the von Trapps in the Sound of Music, so all the more reason why you should visit. In this small city of Salzburg, we shall take a peek at the Goldenes Theater Hotel, a lovely independent hotel located in the New Town area of Salzburg.

Conveniently located within walking distance to most of the sights

What’s mostly great about this hotel is the fact that it is walking distance to most of the sights in Salzburg. There are plenty of banks, souvenir shops and groceries within a few meters walk from the front door of the hotel, and around a 10 minute walk to get to the Old Town, where most of the historic attractions are. The staffs are friendly and knowledgeable of the area, and greet you with a smile as soon as you enter the automatic doors.

Complimentary breakfast during your stay

Another thing that makes this hotel stand out is the fact that you get free breakfast when you stay in the hotel. Nowadays, you rarely get hotels offering breakfast as it costs them a few extra Euros and space in their ground floor to cater to their guests. The dining room is spacious, with separate tables for food and drink, and ample tables & chairs to sit down and enjoy the meal. There is free coffee on your table, which is refilled by the lovely ladies that are manning the dining area.

Relatively big room with stand up shower

The room itself is quite big for European standards. There is space for you to leave your luggage near the door, an en suite bathroom that has a stand up shower (you’ll be surprised at how many hotels in Europe only have tubs with showerheads on them) with a trickle of water pressure, and two twin beds that can accommodate three people. The beds are beside each other, with a bit of space between, making for a bit of a conundrum if you are looking for intimacy and travelling as a couple. These types of beds are typical of European small hotels.

The lobby isn’t large, but it’s well designed, with friendly staff at the main desk, a nearby elevator, and a bar, so should you need a quick pick me up from a long day of walking and touring, it’s a good place to go. Parking is a problem in Salzburg, and most of Europe, really. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn’t have any parking spaces in front of its hotel nor its basement. You can buy a 24-hour pass from reception at a nearby lot for a few Euros. That will save you the bother of trying to find a spot on the streets or getting a ticket by parking without a metered ticket (or an expired one) on your dash. On the bright side, you can park your car temporarily in front of the hotel in designated loading areas when you are checking out and in, so bringing your luggage in and out won’t be such a bother.

Austrian comfort

The Goldenes Theater Hotel is tagged with a four star rating, but note that a hotel’s star rating in Europe is not exactly the same star system as in the US. For the price point, between 80 - 100 USD a night (around 70 - 85+ EUR), the quality of service, the room, amenities, and its close location to the tourist spots, I would jump at a chance to stay here again should I make it back to Salzburg.
