Have you heard of the small Thai island of Koh Si Chang? Not the larger islands called Koh Chang, but a small and cute island off the coast of Chonburi’s Si Racha? If not, you’re missing out! The closest island to Bangkok, it packs in the perfect amount of culture, history, and small beaches for a terrific weekend break.

It is really easy to enjoy Koh Si Chang on a budget, especially when you stay at the friendly Green House Bungalows. Rooms are very basic, but the high standards of cleanliness, the chatty owner, and the unbelievably low rates make it a great base from which to explore the dinky island’s delights.

The low, low price really is right!

A night at Green House Bungalows costs 300 THB (approximately 8 USD). That’s for two people sharing a double room … not the price per person! As well as a double bed, the rooms also have a long wooden bed-like bench. With no mattress, it certainly wouldn’t be the most comfortable place to sleep, but it would be totally possible to have three people sharing the room if you wanted to lower the price even more. A small surcharge may be applied for extra occupancy, but the cost split three ways would be next to nothing!

Basic room facilities

Okay, so honestly, Green House Bungalows definitely wouldn’t win any prizes for luxury! When compared with many typical backpacker accommodation options around Thailand though, it is pretty decent. There may be few furnishings and very little by way of creature comforts, but rooms are clean and secure.

The double bed features a typical Thai-style mattress … one that feels as though it is stuffed with concrete! On the plus side, many Thai people believe that sleeping on a firm surface is much better for the posture and overall health. Don’t expect to sink into bed though – and don’t sit down on the bed too hard or you may be in for a most unpleasant jolt!

As well as the bed and a long wooden bench, the rooms have, rather oddly, a colourful deckchair! A ceiling fan keeps you cool at night.

The rooms are en suite, with a cold water shower, sink, and toilet. The cold water is rarely a problem for many guests during the hot season (March to June), when the soaring temperatures outside will make you happy to stand under the cooling spray. You may want to rethink your options during the cool season though, as the temperatures can drop quite a bit during the night times and early mornings.

Friendly service and useful advice

Whilst Green House Bungalows is a no-frills option, you are sure to be won over by the big beaming smiles from the friendly members of staff. A family-run business, they are more than happy to assist with information about the island and offer helpful recommendations of what to do, where to eat, how to get around, and so on.

An easy way to get around the small island and make the most of your time on Koh Si Chang is to rent a scooter. Make sure you always wear a helmet though, and be careful when taking low-power bikes up steep hills. It is recommended that you only rent a scooter if you already have experience of riding. The guest house can assist with scooter rentals, providing helmets too. Scooter rental costs around 250 THB (approximately 7 USD) for a day.

Things to enjoy on the island of Koh Si Chang

Taam Pang Beach offers a small stretch of golden sand and calm waters, great for relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying the ocean views. The beach is also a great place to watch a beautiful sunset.

Wild goats graze near an area of rugged rocks, and you can hit one of the rocks (conveniently signposted) and hear why it is known as the Bell Rock.

A favourite summer destination for a former Thai king, the atmospheric ruins of the Rama IV Summer Palace are well-worth taking a couple of hours to explore. There are also sacred temples and dark caves to discover, high viewpoints to visit, and if you head to the pier in the evening you can join the locals for a spot of fishing.

If you’re looking to stay at one of the cheapest places on the island, don’t overlook the basic but friendly Green House Bungalows.
