With only a 300 meter (roughly 1000 ft) walk from the world famous Cologne Cathedral, you will reach the oldest and biggest backpacker hostel in town. The hostel also welcomes guests from trade fairs and school groups, with the price per bed starting from approximately 18 EUR (19 USD), depending on the booking season. Read on to find out why this is one of the best hostels downtown.

In August 1998, Station Hostel was the first independent hostel founded in Cologne. Over the past 17 years, it has expanded from a 48- bed hostel to a 2-block building with a brand new restaurant (also cafe & bar), and 217 beds (180 dorm beds & 47 private-room beds). Due to its huge size, there are cameras with connected screens that are checked by the receptionist consistently.

A brand new restaurant

This year, Station Hostel has just opened their own cafe, bar, and restaurant as well as a large Beer Garden, where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with live music DJs and barbecue parties. Here, you will feel like you’re sitting in an actual fancy, but cozy restaurant, without going miles away or searching endlessly for a place to eat in a foreign country.

Sit down on the comfy sofa and relax, watch a sport match on the big screen, or play games and mingle with other guests while enjoying dinner just few stairs from where you sleep. Make yourself at home, as the bar inside also serves alcohol. Don’t forget to taste Cologne’s typical beer - Kolsch!

It’s also possible to cook on your own in a small kitchen on the ground floor. Kitchen tools (pans, pots, cutleries, etc.) and condiments are provided.

Well-maintained, simply decorated dorms

All the dorms’ interior design is based on the color white, creating a fresh and relaxed atmosphere. Beds are placed close to each other, making the room more cozy. There are lamps attached to the wall above each of the beds, enabling guests to enjoy a good night’s sleep at Station Hostel.

Large windows in each rooms with thick seals silence the loud vehicle noises from the Central Station, though guests usually leave them open during summer months.

In case you brought too much luggage, or bought extra clothes here, you can leave them in the storage just inside the room. For valuable belongings, borrow a key from the reception (with deposit), and secure them in the locker. Bed linens and towels are provided for each and every guest.

Great value added service!

Guests can sit in this area and have a chat with one another, whilst browsing the latest on-goings in Cologne at the hostel’s digital touchscreen info board. Station Hostel runs in cooperation with local Walking and Pub Tour companies. Unlike many other hostels, there’s no seasonal price variations according to their transparent pricing policy.

Station Hostel offers a 24-hour reception and late check-out service at 12PM during mid-day. Early booking is always recommended, as some rooms are booked on year in advance, due to the full capacity of hostels all around Cologne during carnival time (November & February) and peak seasons (summer months and December). Cologne’s carnival - the ‘fifth season of the year’ begins on November 11th at 11:11am, but the actual crazy events of it starts throughout the whole February with a parade. During December, Cologne also attracts a large amount of visitors to its famous Christmas market held next to Cologne Cathedral.
