Most visitors to the city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic tend to stay at all-inclusive resorts or rental homes, but stray off the beaten path a little bit and you’ll come across one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean: SunCampDR. A vacation rental property that doubles as an eco-village, it has a freshwater river that runs through the establishment, allowing people to swim away their hangovers in the morning in privacy. With apartment-style rooms, if you’re looking for a retreat as an artist, a place to host your family or just travelling around with friends, this is the ideal place for you.

A property abundant with lush vegetation

SunCampDR is located in the village of Munoz in Puerto Plata - pick-up service is offered here from the airport for 35 USD. The driveway into the property is a hidden hole off the road, but once you’ve gone past the trees that stand tall on either side of you, the narrow driveway opens up to a large property. The establishment is located in a national park, Isabel de Torres, and is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation with fruit trees adorning the entrances of most buildings. A river runs behind the property, next to the restaurant and bar where all the guests congregate in the late evening.

Affordable, furnished and inclusive accommodation awaits you here

SunCampDR consists of five villas separated into 25-30 studios and apartments with an attached restaurant overlooking the river. Each apartment comes with its own kitchen and bathroom, and due to the layout of the place, one would be surprised to find outside noise infiltrating the walls of your room. There are several options for accommodation at SunCampDR, including camping. For those on long-term rentals, there is a monthly price, but if you’re staying for a few days or a couple of weeks, prices range from weekly to daily. The establishment also offers discounts on your stay based on the length and how friendly you are! The prices range from 18 USD a day for camping to 40 USD a day for a private studio room - breakfast is not included. The apartments range from a studio to a three-bedroom apartment - don’t be surprised if you are taken aback at how spacious each option is!

Learn a language while you stay here!

The amenities on offer at this establishment are mind-boggling. With a fully-equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi and a fully-stocked bar, don’t be surprised to find travellers who have ended up staying for months at this establishment. There are also several activities on offer: tour of the mountains (25 USD), or of the waterfalls (35 USD), horseback riding (prices vary), or volunteer your time to the community in a number of ways. Teach or learn a language (usually Spanish), teach someone a skill you may have or help out existing businesses in the community, usually owned by single mothers; the options at SunCampDR are endless and they usually have a bulletin board with a list of activities outside the reception!

SunCampDR will give you a refreshing experience

Whether you want to spend your time sitting by the water, reading and enjoying the silence of nature, or heading to the beach and mingling with the locals or volunteering your time to the nearby community, SunCampDR offers it all. Their countryside apartments are renowned for being both unique and affordable for those on any kind of budget. For those growing weary of the all-inclusive resorts and looking to spice things up, mingle a bit with the community and understand how the locals live and their culture, there’s no better option than SunCampDR.
