If you’re looking for somewhere reasonably-priced to stay close to the heart of historic York and love accommodation options that have heaps of character, the Carlton Tavern could be just what you are looking for. A traditional English pub with lodgings upstairs, you can enjoy lively social activities right at the bottom of the stairs!

Inns were traditionally places where weary travellers could rest for the night, replenishing their energy levels with a meal and a drink and finding a comfortable bed waiting for them. In the olden days, many inns had stabling facilities for horses and space to keep carriages. Nowadays however, most travellers are unlikely to arrive by horse!

You can still imagine what it would have been like in times gone by, whilst enjoying modern features and a much more varied menu than travellers of yesteryear, with a stay at York’s Carlton Tavern.

Cosy and charming rooms

With just a few en suite guest rooms upstairs, you can enjoy the charms of the Carlton Tavern in relative peace and quiet. Some rooms have sloping ceilings and wooden beams, reminiscent of times gone by.

With basic but comfortable furnishings, rooms feature tea and coffee making facilities, a TV, a hairdryer, and an alarm clock. Some rooms have two single beds, whereas others have one double bed. Each room is individual – it is really unlike staying in a hotel where there are many rooms that look the same. Enjoy individual charms and style in small but cosy rooms.

Prices vary as to the precise room, but you should expect to pay around 25 GBP (approximately 36 USD) to 35 GBP (approximately 50 USD) for a night’s accommodation.

Lively pub with a wide choice of food and drinks

The Carlton Tavern primarily functions a pub, and you can grab a table in the large bar or conservatory and relax with a drink … or two! You’ll find the full range of typical pub drinks available, including a wide selection of spirits, bottled beers, lagers, and ciders, beers and ales on tap (pulled from the taps from barrels), pre-mixed bottled cocktails, and soft drinks like fruit juices, tea, coffee, and pop (carbonated drinks like cola and lemonade).

The newly-refurbished pub offers a choice between a carvery or pub favourites, such as burgers, pasta, and sandwiches, from the menu. A carvery is a great way to sample a traditional English roast dinner, with roasted meats carved for guests and a buffet-style selection of vegetables, roast potatoes, gravy, etc.

The pub also has a large beer garden, ideal for sitting outside in warm weather. There is sometimes live entertainment, music, and other fun events.

Eat, drink, and be merry – you don’t have to worry about having to go far to your bed!

The Carlton Tavern is situated around 2.6 kilometres (1.6 miles) from York city centre. Public buses stop just a short distance away from the pub, making getting to and from the property really easy. Members of staff can assist with directing you to the bus stop if you have arrived by private vehicle but want to use public transportation for travelling around the city. The bus journey into the city centre takes around ten minutes. It is also possible to walk into the city.

The Carlton Tavern has a large car park at the rear for customers to use.

York activities and attractions

York is a popular city for tourists, with a long history and numerous great attractions and activities. Some of the city’s most famous attractions include the stunning gothic York Minster, The Shambles, JORVIK Viking Centre, York Castle Museum, and Clifford’s Tower.

The Carlton Tavern is especially close to the interesting York Cold War Bunker – sitting almost next to each other it takes just two minutes to walk from your accommodation to the attraction. A great place for people who love learning more about fairly recent history, the bunker was still in use up until the 1990s. It provides a fascinating insight into strategic planning and monitoring during the Cold War period (late 1940s to early 1990s) in the UK.

Enjoy a pleasant stay at the Carlton Tavern and have fun enjoying York’s many delights and a sociable ambience at the end of each day.
