In recent years, the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong (or simply, Hong Kong as it is known around the world) has risen to become one of the most dynamic economies in Asia. It has gained popularity as a capital of fashion and, to many, a shopping paradise. As such, Hong Kong sees hordes of tourists visiting its shores every year from around the world.

There are many lavish hotels in Hong Kong, some of which are a little on the expensive side for budget travellers. Fortunately, the Lodgewood Hotel, established in April 2013, is a uniquely modern boutique hotel with affordable prices and a top-notch, professional service team.

Stylishly modern rooms for comfort

The relatively new Lodgewood Hotel is not an establishment with an enormous number of guestrooms. The property only contains a humble 87 guestrooms and suites. But for what it lacks in quantity, the Lodgewood Hotel certainly more than makes up for it in quality.

Each of the 87 modestly-sized rooms are eloquently designed and furnished with modern urban décor. The walls are decorated with mounted plaques showcasing a collage of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist locations and gives off a lively vibe.

While slightly smaller compared to other hotels, the rooms at the Lodgewood feature a flat-screen television, an en-suite bathroom (with a rain shower), a microwave, coffee and tea-making appliances and a electronic safe. Rooms at the Lodgewood are designed to maximise functionality and comfort and is based on superior space management.

The intricate design of the room allows guests to store luggage in a compartment under the linen-lined beds much like the way hand-carry luggage is stored under the seat on a plane. This ‘furniture within furniture’ design not only maximises comfort but also ensures that not one inch of space in the rooms are wasted!

The price for one of these space-efficient and modern compact rooms ranges from 880 HKD - 3740 HKD (113.55 USD - 482.56 USD) per night depending on room type. Do note that prices listed are walk-in rates and that the hotel offers advanced booking price reductions of up to 10%.

Grab a cup of coffee and surf the net in the guest lounge

The guest lounge is found on the first floor, adjacent to the reception desk. It features a few Mac stations for guests to surf the web and complimentary coffee which is available throughout the day.

Although wireless internet access is available throughout the property, the guest lounge, with its modern and comfortable design, is still a nice place to sit back and grab some coffee while surfing the net.

However, it must be said that due to the fact that the lounge and lobby are connected, it can sometimes get a little crowded and noisy, especially when there are entire tour groups waiting to be checked in.

Culinary options: luxury or simple pleasures

Despite the Lodgewood’s many positive points, unfortunately, the hotel does not include breakfast in any of its packages nor does it serve breakfast at a separate cost. However, there is no cause for concern if you are one who believes that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You need not go far to find a good meal to start your day.

Just across the street from the Lodgewood, on Mongkok Road, you will find two eateries side by side which operate from 7a.m. until late night. One shop serves up traditional Chinese style breakfast congee/porridge (choose from a wide range of ingredients) with yau tiew (Chinese fried pastry) while the other is more of a Hong Kong Cha Chan Teng (Hong Kong style tea restaurant) which serves up delicious noodles, snacks and rice dishes.

One dish that is highly recommended from the latter is its ngau lam lou meen (braised tender beef brisket with noodles). Make sure to ask for a dash of oyster sauce for that extra bit of flavour! Regardless of which eatery you choose to start your day with, it is unlikely that you would spend more than 70 HKD (9.03 USD) for the meal. Although the two eateries do not have English names, it would take quite a lot to miss them!

The in-house restaurant in the Lodgewood Hotel is a hotpot restaurant called the Canton Pot. It is recognised as one of the very best hotpot restaurants in Hong Kong and serves up a variety of hotpot dishes from 5p.m. till 12.30a.m. daily. However, while the food is indeed delicious and offers great variety, be prepared to fork out between 200 - 400 HKD (25.81 USD - 51.61 USD) per meal, which for hotpot, is considered to be a little on the posh side.

Rub shoulders with the locals in the very heartbeat of the city

It can’t be denied that no matter how luxurious or well presented a hotel is, its location still plays a major part in a guest’s decision to stay there. Staying at the Lodgewood would mean staying in Mongkok, which is the very heart of Hong Kong.

The Mongkok region is one of the city’s busiest (and liveliest) areas, filled with countless shopping malls and eateries and with even more people! The Lodgewood is conveniently situated on MongKok Road and is close to several monorail and bus stations, which can ferry guests to almost every other part of the city.

In addition, several popular shopping malls and night markets (such as the Ladies’ Market and Temple Street Night Market) are but a 10 minutes’ walk away. Langham Place, one of Mongkok’s most popular shopping mall located a block away from Nathan Road, Hong Kong’s famous shopping street, is also only a short walk away from the Lodgewood.

A winner in its own right

Even though the Lodgewood is still relatively young (a little more than 2 years old), it has already established itself as a prestigious establishment. In 2015, it was declared as a winner at the World Luxury Hotel Awards, taking home the award for Luxury Boutique Hotel of the year.

But don’t be swayed by the bedazzlement of awards, book a stay at the Lodgewood Hotel and experience first-hand what it means to stay in a hotel that gets you as close as possible to the heart of Hong Kong!
