Zarautz is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Spain. Located on the northeastern coast, in Basque Сountry, the beach offers good-quality consistent breaks and great peaks. Popular with both professional-level surfers and beginners, the beach has everything going for it—from surfing shops and camps to cafes and a happening party atmosphere. The long sandy beach is also perfect to just relax, with ample facilities, including lifeguards and showers. Close to Bilbao in Basque Country is where you find Meñakoz, a beach that draws expert surfers. This is a surfing beach with a reputation for being dangerous for all but the most experienced—you can expect large waves going up to 5 m (16 ft), strong rips, and sharp rocks at the bottom. This is not the place to learn surfing, so go here only if you are a skilled surfer. The beach itself is beautiful with grey tones but is rather rocky with a difficult access path. Schedule your trip between the months of September and April.
