Located 15 minutes by train from the city center, Black Sheep Hostel (as its name already implies) is a fun and cozy place to stay in Köln (also known as Cologne). It’s located on the corner of a big square, Barbarossaplatz 1, on the second floor. Trams to the city station and other main attractions of Cologne are right at your doorstep (2 minute walk). The whole hostel, including all of the rooms, is designed in a funky way, with lots of colors and paintings on the walls. Read on to get further insights of the Black Sheep Hostel.
Small and cozy playroom/kitchen for get-togethers
Walk to the end of the big hallway, passing by colorful walls, and you will find a small playroom. There’s no Wi-Fi in the playroom. Thus guests can talk, hangout more, and even sing while taking turns playing the guitar. There’s a big balcony outside for having a cup of coffee or tea in the morning while reading the newspaper, enjoying the scenery or smoking.
The main lounge is also used for cooking and dining, and the necessary equipment is provided by the Hostel. You would only need to take care of cleaning the cups and plates that you used! Breakfast with bread, including nutella and jam, along with cereal and milk are also included in the room price.
All sorts of rooms with hilarious names!
There are all sorts of funny names used appropriately to complement each room’s interior design, such as the Africa Room, Swedish room, 4711 (named after a famous cologne), Honeymoon (for couples), etc. Every level of the hostel is covered with carpet, ensuring that the atmosphere is always warm and cozy for all visitors.
One of the most commonly booked rooms, the Dragon room, is a mixed 8-bed dorm. The price per bed starts from approximately 20 USD, with a 10 USD key deposit that you can get back when checking out.

The Dragon dorm has 8 beds, with each of them having its own curtains and lamp. Thus, you can still enjoy privacy in a mixed-dorm. As you may notice, fluffy dragons are hung here and there around the room, making the whole atmosphere cheerful, especially during rainy days.
There’s a small table in the middle of the room. Hence guests can enjoy working with full Wi-Fi speed here. Bed linens are given during check-in without any further charge, but you have to bring them to the washing box when checking out. There are a few small lockers inside each room for guests’ use. Drinking and eating are forbidden inside the room.
Showers are either mixed or for females only!
In case you wonder about wash-room conditions, there are also two options for showering: mixed and female-only.
As Black Sheep is not a huge hostel, it’s easy to make friends while traveling and staying here. Guests come as visitors for only a couple of days, or as students or workers who can’t find accommodation in Cologne within short notice, and usually have a nice time during their stay.
