Smack dab in the middle of downtown Dallas is the Joule, a boutique luxury hotel. Named after the international unit of energy, this hotel will wow you with its energy. Whether you enter from the Main Street or Commerce Street entrances a large moving cog-and-wheel sculpture will grab your attention. One monstrous wheel is suspended from the lobby ceiling, and the other stands are upright making contact from floor to ceiling.
If that’s not eye-catching enough several tall mosaic pieces of artwork by Millard Sheets, a mid-century artist whose pieces adorned the Mercantile Building will attract your attention. These stunning works of art were to be demolished with the Mercantile Building until Joule owner Tim Headington stepped in to save them in 2012. Tim spent a lot of money salvaging and restoring these precious works of art. The Joule displays more than 70 of them currently. Art lovers will enjoy exploring The Joule’s public areas to see what works of art owned by Tim Headington are on display.
A pet palace
Checking in at reception you will be briefed on the key points of your stay. Nine room types await your discretion. The Demi-Joule is cozy, but comfortable. Guests will enjoy 300 thread-count sheets, rainfall showers, down pillows, 47”/18.5 cm flat-screen TV, Apple TV, Niven Morgan in-room bath amenities, mini bar, free weekday newspaper, and 24 hour in-room dining. The Joule is a pet friendly hotel, no deposit, but guests are required to sign an agreement to pay for any damages fido might cause.
A Premier Room will give you space to kick up your heels in a 600 sq ft/55 m² space while sampling drinks from the mini bar and indulging in local goodies. For the Texas-style billionaires or billionaire wannabes, there are penthouses ranging from 1,350 sq ft/125.4 m² to 2,500 sq ft/325 m² to choose from. These pleasure palaces up high feature oversized living rooms, kitchens, dining room table, exquisite views and museum quality art. If that’s not enough to wow you, consider you will have your own outdoor entertaining area, Bose sound systems, oversized tubs, and a fully stocked bar: a perfect place to live it up in the Big D.
Trendy hotel shops
Other hotel-wide features are Taschen Library, a vibrant bookshop on the main floor. Relax with a book for a few minutes or purchase it, and they will ship it home for you if you are staying with them. TENOVERSIX is a cool shop with up and coming fashion designers, art, home design goods, music and more. Let your rock-star self-loose with goods from TRAFFIC LA, a contemporary designer boutique that started out in Hollywood in the 1970s. You too can buy clothing here like actors, musicians and stylists, or a hip Texan.
Restaurant choices cover what you need with everything from a coffeeshop-Weekend, a cocktail salon-Midnight Rambler, an acclaimed modern brasserie-CBD Provisions, the Lobby Bar, a casual Italian restaurant-Americano, and for afternoon champagne tea service Texas style-Tea at Taschen. If you desire more dining choices, The Joule is in the center of downtown and close to dozens of excellent choices within a few minutes walk or Uber ride. If you like Japanese food, Tei-An is one of the best in North America for soba noodles and more, and only a 5 minute ride away. Or try Smoke, an award-winning barbeque restaurant on the west side of downtown where the beef brisket is tender and tasty.
For mind and body
The Joule also pampers guest with a fine spa and separate 24-hour group fitness studio, VITAL, offering a range of classes from cycling and yoga to TRX and HIIT. Soothe your travel weary mind and body in The Spa with the “Blissful Ritual”, an 110-minute treatment where you will get exfoliated, your scalp massaged, while wrapped in an excellent detoxifying wrap. After showering receive a full-body massage with aromatherapy oil.
Spaces for meeting and private events are available at The Joule with over 14,000 sq ft/4,267 m² flexible inside space or 16,000 sq ft/1,486 m² outdoor space; they have your event needs’ covered. The pool area overlooks the 30 foot tall/9.1 meters “Eye” sculpture, located on an outdoor lawn across Main Street. Their unique glass-fronted cantilevered outdoor pool hangs 8 feet/2.4 meters off the buildings edge. This is one special pool! But be advised the pool it’s only for hotel guests, and it closes during winter.
The Joule is perfect for a boutique luxury stay if travel takes you to downtown Dallas. Few hotels anywhere in Texas can match the style, luxury and location.
