Love. What is it? It is magical. It is emotional; it is raw. It is full of so many feelings, emotions and dreams. You may be searching for the one — your soul mate, or you may have found him or her. Whether you have or not, you will recall the feelings that you experienced when you met someone that could be the one. Your heart skipped a beat. Your imagination wandered. Your body and mind felt like it was elevated and at times, the whole experience felt surreal. The feeling of finding the one and falling in love is a beautiful experience and it is so beautiful that Friedrichstadt-Palast has captured the experience of one man who is longing for his soul mate to come into his life through its latest revue show, THE ONE Grand Show.

A revue show with a beautiful concept

With this revue show having such a beautiful concept, it is no surprise that it is being performed in the exquisite Friedrichstadt-Palast, which is located at Friedrichstraße 107, 10117 Berlin, Germany. We can all connect with the concept as we have all experienced love in some shape or form and it is only rightly so that one of the largest theatre spaces in Europe is offering you the experience to rekindle your own memories and emotions.

Revue shows have a concept but not necessarily a continuing story line in the classical sense, which I feel is quite wonderful because you just see snapshots of the main performer’s mind and you can feel the different emotions that he experiences such as anxiety, excitement, confusion and most importantly, love. His mind-set shifts from past to present tense and at times, the line blurs and you can sense his anticipation to find out where he really is and what he is feeling.

Friedrichstadt-Palast has created this experience with more than 100 artists on its breathtakingly stage and a production budget of more than 11 million EUR (12 million USD). From the moment that you enter, you will be impressed by the lobby, bar and foyer space. With red carpets, crystal chandeliers, stained glass and light fittings, there is a real 1930s feel to the whole place and as this revue show is about finding love, which is timeless, the romantic feel to the theatre is certainly welcomed.

Jean Paul Gaultier releases his dreams with love

Photo: Tobias Schwarz

Jean Paul Gaultier once said, “Open your eyes and find beauty where you normally don’t expect to see it”. This statement resonates perfectly with the concept of finding the one and falling in love. As individuals, we long to be connected to others; to feel and experience that energy that lifts us into another realm and in the process of finding and meeting this person, we have moments in our life where we start and stop in respect to searching for the one and this is because of how we feel and other things occurring in our lives. In the instances where we do stop, we sometimes find that beauty, that love, in a place that we did not expect to see it.

To reflect and show the different forms of beauty and to surprise you as a viewer of THE ONE Grand Show, Jean Paul Gaultier has designed and made 500 spectacular costumes. These costumes highlight his avant-garde fashion, which is characterized primarily by boldness and inventiveness. He is a living legend of haute couture and has dreamed of working on a revue show since he was a child, so it is wonderful to see that his dream was released in a show which has such an emotional and relatable concept.

Oscillation, moving back and forth

Photo: Sven Darmer

The set has been designed by Jan Wunsche, who has utilised the space in its entirety and considered how to make the biggest impact during each scene, contingent on the specific emotion that is being invoked and shared with the audience. Working alongside Jan Wunsche was Peter Morse who focused on the lighting design, Marc Vidal who worked on the video design and Cedric Beatty who led on the sound design front.

The music, arrangements and song lyrics have been formed by the exceptional Daniel Behrens, Christian Lohr, Gregor Meyle, KT Tunstall, Maya Singh, Robin Hoffmann and Kevin Schroeder. The show band and band members have brought all of this to life with their passion and commitment to music and to love through delivering a noteworthy experience for you to remember and do an exceptional job in doing so.

The photograph from the scene that you see above is called, “Oscillation”, which concerns the process of moving back and forth; this represents how our minds shift from the past to the present when we are experiencing something new and we are deliberating whether it is real — such as meeting a new person who could be or is the one person that we are meant to be with for the rest of our lives.

Mesmerising and incredible acrobats flying high

Photo: Sven Darmer

The extremely talented and hardworking artists in THE ONE Grand Show will captivate you with their performances. Valerie Inertie will certainly awe you and the entire audience with her Cyr wheel (an oversized hula-hoop), which she uses whilst hanging with aerial silks on the set. She makes some jaw dropping movements throughout her scene and is one of very few women in the world that presents a Cyr act at shows and festivals around the world, including in Cirque du Soleil.

Equally incredible are the Bazaily sisters who have formed to create Duo Trapeze and in fact started their careers at the age of 16 in Cirque du Soleil. Their breath-taking performance on the trapeze will have you on edge as they fly high and show the skill of strength, determination and trust in each other. They are truly mesmerising in their act, which may I add, they perform so effortlessly and beautifully.

The international acrobatic group Les Farfadais also star in THE ONE Grand Show and bring together some of the world’s best acrobats, who share the same desire and passion to keep your eyes on what they are trying to portray and illustrate through their movement and facial expressions.

Phenomenal and energetic ballet ensemble

Photo: Tobias Schwarz

Adding to the sound, lights and acrobats is the phenomenal ballet ensemble of THE ONE Grand Show. Choreography that has been put together by Marguerite Donlon, Brian Friedman, Alexandra Georgieva, Craig Revel Horwood and Ronald Savkovic. These individuals are some of the most sought after choreographers in the world and have worked together to formulate an incomparable creation in THE ONE Grand Show.

When one dances, they feel more alive, more powerful and beautiful and these positive feelings are injected throughout each performance and perfectly reflect one of the emotions that one can feel when they are becoming closer to or having found the one: liberated, united, joyful and completely loved. You can feel that this revue show is one in which each performer can and does relate to and expresses through each routine and very much as if they are creating an artistic masterpiece of the concept.

You will be enthralled and enraptured

Visiting Friedrichstadt-Palast is always a pleasure and I would recommend that you book tickets in advance to see THE ONE Grand Show, which will enthral and enrapture your mind and heart. The visions from a young man’s dreams and hope of finding the one will allow you to enjoy his journey whilst reminiscing about your own experiences in comfort and unity with others around you. The ticket prices start from 32.90 EUR (36.80 USD). In my view, this revue performance executes perfectly in terms of colour, movement, arrangements and music and coupled with the extremely friendly and professional attendants within the Palast, your overall experience will be fantastic. Congratulations to Roland Welke and Dr. Berndt Schmidt for formulating and delivering such an incredible opportunity for locals and tourists of Berlin that heart performance arts.
