The home of shooting stars, that is the other name of Hokkaido’s Ashibetsu City.

The Sorachigawa River passes through the green covered mountains and upstream to it is Lake Takizato.

With the setting sun, the sky is filled with stars that almost feel like they are raining down on you.

At this beautiful city of Ashibetsu there is a high quality hot spring welling out of the ground that is even covered by national healthcare.

Ashibetsu Onsen located in the onsen area of Yuya, is actually a large resort area including the Starlight Hotel and the Seiyukan bath house, and a day trip only onsen facility.

The Ministry of Environment recognizes that Ashibetsu Onsen is a National Health Care Onsen Facility.

This is the only one in Hokkaido.

A National Health Care Onsen Facility means that it’s effects and the amount of water, then temperature, and the environment around it surpass a level of standard that is healthy for you.

This onsen passes all those criteria and is a very high quality one.

You can visit Seiyukan on a day trip or you can stay the night there.

There are several types of hot spring water here, a sauna and an outdoor bath here.

There are two water types here, “sulfur, sodium, hydrogen carbonate” and “sulfur, sodium, bicarbonate, chloride”.

They are good for keeping your body temperature high and nicknamed “cosmetic baths”.

This is the outdoor bath at Seiyukan.

At night you can bathe while under a star filled night sky.

The Starlight Hotel connected to the Seiyukan Onsen facilities, and it has a very resort hotel-like exterior charm.

At the restaurant you can have Ashibetsu local rice, vegetables, and fruits.

The bread here uses wheat grown locally as well, and is baked here at the hotel.

If you tell them any allergies you have upon reservation they will adjust the menu to you. Also the medical bath plan is highly recommended.

Next to Seiyukan and the Starlight Hotel is a day trip onsen facility.

It is used by the locals for treatment such as sciatica, chronic dermatitis, chronic female hormone imbalance, burns, motor paralysis and many more.

At the shop and even at the mall, you can get soaps made from the Ashibetsu Onsen Starlight Hotel hot spring water and collagen that have been aged and dried naturally.

Since its made with hot spring water you can use it at home as a facial soap or even give it away as a gift.

Even more there is a bathwater additive in the background of the image above that you contains the same minerals that are in the hot spring water here, that you can use at home as well.

In closing

Access to Ashibetsu is easy by being only an hour and 40 minute drive from Sapporo. From the New Chitose Airport it is about a 2 hour drive.

There is also the option of trains or buses that go from Sapporo to Ashibetsu.

It is between Takikawa and Furano so it is a great place to stay the night while sightseeing in the area.
