A hidden treasure lays nestled in the Selkirk Mountains along the Kootenay Lake. “The Heritage Capital of British Columbia,” Nelson, is a small city with over 350 heritage buildings that have been beautifully restored. Alongside the gently lapping water of Kootenay Lake is the lovely Prestige Lakeside Resort. The town and hotel possess some of the most spectacular views of the mountains and lake.

Prestige Lakeside Resort is located two blocks from Nelson’s city center. It sits on Kootenay Lake’s West Arm shores. The waterfront location, as its name suggests, offers stunning views of the lake and Elephant Mountain. The resort is in the ideal location for discovering the city, walking through the park to the beach, or as a base for hiking and skiing day trips. Accommodations in the hotel have either a city or lake view and range from standard rooms to luxurious individually designed suites. During your stay at the resort, you can enjoy the use of free board games, beach toys, and bicycles. Paddleboards and kayaks are available for rental from the Prestige Marina.

The resort is located on the edge of Kootenay Lake with the Prestige Marina steps away from the entrance. It is also a short stroll through the park to get to the beach. If you do not feel like walking, you can take the Heritage Streetcar #23 from just outside the entrance of the hotel. The streetcar has been in service since 1924. Travelling along the waterfront, the Streetcar #23 stops at Hall Street (by the Prestige Hotel), Chahko Mika Mall, and Lakeside Park. Lakeside Park is a great place to enjoy the beach and the Rose Garden Café. You can enjoy the waterfront ride during the summer and fall months.

Nelson also has countless outdoor activities year-round. Here, in the winter months, you can enjoy snowshoeing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, downhill and cross-country skiing. In the summer months, fishing, golfing, hiking, mountain biking, and swimming are popular activities.

The cultural and arts scene is large and diverse. Nelson has numerous local galleries and museums in the walkable and heritage-rich downtown. The city contains four micro-breweries and has the most prominent burlesque scene east of Vancouver in British Columbia.

The Prestige Hotel contains 101 rooms. All rooms are equipped with a coffee maker, mini-fridge, 42" (107 cm) plasma TV, telephone, hairdryer, and complimentary Wi-Fi access. They also contain either queen-size or king-size beds. Cityside Rooms showcase views of the Selkirk Mountains and Lakeside Rooms have a balcony with views of the lake and Elephant Mountain. Kitchenette suites are stocked with cooking utensils and cutlery.

I stayed in the Africa Suite. It is a large corner suite with a king-size four-poster bed. It has a broad entryway with a desk, and a separate sitting area with couch and corner jetted tub with bath salts. The large bathroom contained a big rain shower and bath amenities along with plush housecoats and slippers. The balcony overlooked Kootenay Lake, the Prestige Marina, Elephant Mountain, and views of BOB — the Big Orange Bridge.

The Prestige Marina has kayaks and stand up paddle boards available for rent. Daily, overnight, weekly, and monthly moorage is available. The marina facilities also include liquor sales, shore power, a supply store, and marine gas. For more information about the Prestige, see their website.

The resort contains one lounge and one restaurant. The West Coast Grill offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can enjoy the beautiful outdoors on the patio overlooking the lake or inside the homey restaurant. The restaurant provides fresh creations using local ingredients to please every palate.
