A grand staircase is the first thing guests notice upon entering The Rose Hotel in Pleasanton. The hotel is reminiscent of grand hotels from the turn of the twentieth century. This 38 room boutique hotel was built in 2001 and filled an important niche in luxury lodging.

Travelers heading to Pleasanton come for business, leisure, wine touring, and other purposes. Without a doubt, The Rose Hotel is the best choice for all of these reasons to visit the Tri-Valley. Since most visitors drive to the area it’s good to know covered parking is available at no extra cost. Electric vehicle charging stations are also available to guests.

Customer service is outstanding at the Rose Hotel. Several of the employees have been working there for many years. Phyllis, the general manager, has been with the hotel since it opened 18 years ago, as has Tom the sales and marketing manager.

After checking in at reception, take a look at the gorgeous lobby that’s refined but not stuffy. Comfy chairs and sofas invite guests to linger over a cup of coffee and a newspaper in the morning. There’s a bar for cocktails, wine, and beer in the afternoon and evening.

Spotlessly clean guest rooms and suites are on the second and third floors. King and queen rooms start at 315 USD, while luxury suites start at 595 USD. Room amenities include plush robes, daily beverage service, French press coffee set, morning newspaper delivery on weekdays, scented candles, ZoeeTree Bluetooth speaker, and organic toiletries.

While a deluxe king or twin queen room will do for most guests, a fireplace suite is an obvious choice for couples seeking an intimate visit. A king suite comes in at an impressive 950 sq ft/88.25 sq m and includes a separate lounge area and an additional half bathroom. The grand suite has a massive 1,100 sq ft/102.19 sq m of luxury and can be joined with the neighboring deluxe king room for a two-bedroom suite.

Excellent amenities

All guests receive an extensive complimentary continental breakfast each morning in the lobby from 6:30-10:00 a.m. Enjoy Peets coffee with fresh fruit, pastries, bread, bagels, ham, hot-smoked salmon (not served hot), lox, yogurt, and cereal. Several seating options are available in the lobby like cafe tables, sofa and coffee tables.

Other amenities at the Rose Hotel are a boardroom for meetings and an exercise room. Business meetings at The Boardroom accommodate up to 20 persons. A sprawling burl-wood conference table allows plenty of space to get down to business. Have your meeting catered so you don’t have to interrupt your business by going out to eat.

Some guests might miss room service and town car service that some luxury hotels have. But with the advent of ride sharing services like Uber and LYFT, most Rose Hotel guests will adjust to these minor hardships.

The interior of the Rose Hotel is attractive and well-maintained. The maintenance and housekeeping teams are so efficient the hotel looks like it was recently remodeled. Furnishings are of the highest quality as are the decorations in the rooms and common areas. You’ll feel like you are staying in a posh mansion.

On the second floor, view the collection of old black and white photos of Pleasanton taken around the turn of the twentieth century. Look closely, and you’ll find a picture of the original Rose Hotel that was located further down Main Street.

What's near the hotel

While the quality of the hotel and its amenities are enough reason to stay, the location is tops also. A walk of five to ten minutes on Main Street will provide a dizzying array of shops, wine bars, brewpubs, and delicious restaurants.

Other Pleasanton restaurants include Blue Agave, Ramen 101, Pairings Wine Bistro, Inklings Coffee & Tea, Senro Sushi, Barone’s-next to the Rose Hotel, and many more.

For high-end dining, don’t miss Sabio at Main Street and Rose Avenue. Sabio is a Seasonal California Cuisine restaurant. As such, chef Francis X Hogan will delight diners with an ever-changing menu to reflect what’s at peak flavor for your visit. When I visited, the chef had just received black cod from Monterey, California. Chef Hogan served the cod with a butternut rugosa puree, bosc pear chutney, braised fennel, and curried walnuts. The cod was crispy perfection and paired well with the fennel and other accompaniments.

There will be excellent wine

The Pleasanton and Livermore areas are blessed with some of the best wineries in California. Staying at the Rose Hotel puts you near over 30 world-class wineries. Wente and Concannon have been making wine in the area since the 1880s and are a great place to start wine exploring.

For smaller wineries, I recommend Fenestra Winery, McGrail Vineyards and Winery, 3 Steves Winery, Page Mill Winery, and Retzlaff Estate Vineyards. Both McGrail and 3 Steves won the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Awards for best red wine in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Winning this prize that most agree is the most prestigious wine award, helped put the Livermore Valley on the wine map.

When to go

If you go, make sure and reserve your room ahead of time. Phyllis, the general manager told me, “ We sell out almost all Monday-Thursdays throughout the year.” The best time to look for a deal is on weekends, but whichever days of the week you choose, you will love this luxurious hotel in a very pleasant town.
