It is impossible to visit Monopoli without admiring its castle in the town’s historical center. The castle is located on the most jutting headland on the coast, in a strategic position for the defense of the town and the harbor. In 1544, the Viceroy of Naples, Don Pedro de Toledo, was instructed by Carlo V to rebuild the old Norman-Swabian castle which was destroyed by the inhabitants of Monopoli during an insurrection in 1414. The interesting parade ground allows the viewing of the Sentry’s walkway that connects the look-out towers on the northeast and southeast corners.
