Did you know that France and the Netherlands share a border? They do! But not in Europe, in the Caribbean. The island goes by two name: St. Martin on the French side and St. Maarten on the Dutch. Getting there should be no problem as it is a very popular tourist destination, with Princess Julianna International Airport serving as the main airport on the island. There are also many ports for people arriving by boat. Legend has it that Christopher Columbus arrived on the island during his second voyage to the new world.
Luckily, you don’t need to learn French or Dutch to be able to get by, as English is the primary language spoken by locals. The Island is known for its beaches, casinos, shopping, eating, and its delicious rum - no wonder it’s such a great tourist spot! Pack your sun screen and bathing suit because here’s some of the best things to do on the Island of St. Martin/St. Maarten.
1. Spend the afternoon at Maho Beach
Maho Beach is probably one of the most popular beaches on St. Maarten. Because it is directly adjacent to Princess Julianna Airport, incoming planes landing there often come down pretty close to the beach, making it a fun place for plane spotting! Plane spotting here is such a popular activity that there are boards posted around the beach that display incoming and outgoing times that the planes come and go. Because of its threshold to the runaway, Maho Beach is more of a place for thrills rather than relaxation, so keep that in mind if you were expecting something a little more low-key for your beach day.
