The Pyrenees. At 491 kilometers (305 miles) long and with the highest elevation at 3,404 meters (11,168 feet), this mountain range is a wonderland for hikers, skiers, rafters, and climbers. Spanning France and Spain and featuring mountain peaks, valley trails, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, and ski slopes, it’s difficult to decide where to go. If you’re interested in seeing three glacial lakes against a backdrop of stunning mountains, this article gives you everything you need to know to have a complete excursion in the Pyrenees in Spain’s Posets-Maladeta Natural Park.

Ibonet de Batisielles

Starting from the mountain shelter of Refugio de Estós, follow the signs to Ibonet de Batisielles. The first of the three lakes, this “ibonet”, or “little glacial lake”, in Aragonese is a petite introduction to this route. About two kilometers (1.2 miles) from Refugio de Estós, the path to this small wonder is clearly marked with signs. Ideally situated in front of mountains and pine trees, Ibonet de Batisielles is a great spot for a water break before moving on to the next lake, Ibon de Escarpinosa. Cabaña Santa Ana, a small one-room stone shelter, is located next to the lake for protection in case it rains during your adventure.

Ibon de Escarpinosa

Found less than two kilometers (1.2 miles) from Ibonet de Batisielles, Ibon de Escarpinosa is nestled against the rocky base of a nearby mountain. The forty-minute hike to Ibon de Escarpinosa is well-worth it, and the way is clearly marked starting from Ibonet de Batisielles. This medium-sized lake features clear turquoise water and the dramatic backdrop of the nearby peak. The trail takes you to the north side of the lake where there are many large stones, perfect for those who are ready for a snack break. You will have to head back to Ibonet de Batisielles and then follow the signs to your last stop, Ibon de Batisielles.

The largest and most spectacular of these three lakes, Ibon de Batisielles is the gem of this hike. Starting from the sign at Ibonet de Batisielles, you will head up the mountainside and walk alongside a creek for just over two kilometers (1.2 miles). As you hike further, you will encounter a rocky trail. Be careful here, especially if it’s raining. The scramble over these stones is a little challenging for new hikers, but after one last push through a group of trees, you will hike over the crest of the hill and arrive at the highlight of the day, Ibon de Batisielles.

Planning your hike

Your best bet is to stop in the nearby village of Benasque and pick up free maps from the tourist office. Then drive to the Valle de Estós parking lot, and, from the parking lot, follow the signs for about eight kilometers (5 miles) to the mountain shelter, Refugio de Estós, and spend the night there. Public transportation options are limited, so having your own vehicle is the best way to enjoy the area and go on a roadtrip.

For the reasonable price of 16.80 EUR (18.90 USD) per night, you can enjoy the shelter’s patio with a magnificent view of the mountains, use the bathroom and shower facilities, and sleep on a bunk bed equipped with pillows and blankets. You’ll be able to wake up the next morning fresh and ready to tackle this route and see three lakes in one day. If you need food and water, there are supermarkets in Benasque. Also, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the shelter at additional cost of 6 EUR (6.70 USD) for breakfast and 16 EUR (18 USD) each for lunch and dinner. Check their website for more information and happy hiking!
