Have you always dreamt of visiting the birthplace of ancient mythology - where all the mysterious legends about the gods of love, war, wisdom, strength, etc. started? Have you been longing to lie on the white sand, and the opportunity to swim down the ocean after those long days of working at the office? If the answer is yes, book your next trip to Europe and explore Greece - where you can find the origin of all the mythological stories, and explore some of the best beaches in Europe at the same time. Here are the top 4 recommended destinations in Greece, and my hands-on tips for traveling throughout the country.

Athens - the ancient mythological capital

top 4 destinations in greece, along with transportation tips | athens - the ancient mythological capital

The ancient Greek capital city has long been famous for its mythology, the ‘high city’ Acropolis, the Roman architecture seen through an abundance of temples, squares, and stadiums where, nowadays, only ruins remain. The city consists of several unique areas, including the most important historic districts: Plaka, Monastiraki, and Thiseio. Athens is not a small city, but everything is discoverable on foot through the car-free archeological walk starting from Vasilissis Amalias Street. Continuing on, you will go through the Acropolis, Herodion Theatre, Thiseio, Ermou Street, and end at a popular nightlife area, Kerameikos.

Climbing up the Acropolis requires some hiking and walking, so prepare yourself by wearing comfy shoes. There are multiple cheap flight connections with Ryanair and Aegean Airlines to Athens, thus it’s a perfect spot to start your trip to Greece. Even though this capital city is not a top-rated destination in the country among many travellers, it’s still a great place where you can take a ferry to almost every surrounding island.

Santorini - the honeymoon dreamland

Well-known throughout Europe as one of the most romantic destinations in Greece, Santorini is a popular attraction not only for couples on their honeymoon, but for all kinds of travellers. Santorini includes several islands surrounding the main village Fira. There are endless ways to allure these gorgeous islands: from viewing the blue domes and colourful houses on the cliff lying by the seaside under the sunset in Oia, to enjoying affordable and high-quality seafood in various local restaurants around Fira. If you are tired after hiking through the volcanoes and many stairs around Fira, relax on the various beach spots around town.

The different islands of Santorini can be visited by taking a short day cruise. Other than that, the main attractions of Fira, including the most famous Red Beach and White Beach, can be easily reached on foot if you stay within the village. From Athens to Santorini, take the long-hour ferry, instead of the fast one during the same day. It takes a few hours more but costs a lot less, and the ride is quite convenient. Another option, is to book a direct flight which takes between 1 and 2 hours, and costs just about the same as the ferry if you book at least 2 weeks in advance with Ryanair.

Thessaloniki - the cultural centre and nightlife hotspot

With about a million inhabitants, Thessaloniki is known for being the Greek’s cultural capital with versatile events and festivals, and for some of the best nightlife in Europe. The city centre inside the Byzantine Walls consists of two parts: the central commercial and the historic centre - where the main attractions are located. Bounded by the Sea in the South, Thessaloniki also offers wonderful spots for swimming.

The city’s main attractions are located around the White Tower, making it easy to visit all the popular places on foot. There are plenty of cheap flight connections with Ryanair to Thessaloniki SKG Airport from multiple destinations around Europe. From the surrounding Balkan countries, you can also access Thessaloniki by train, thus it is an ideal spot to start your next Balkan trip.

Chania - the heaven of beach resorts

top 4 destinations in greece, along with transportation tips | chania - the heaven of beach resorts

With its old town centred around the harbour, Chania is made up of plenty of alleys, houses, and beach resorts stretching 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) along the bay. Despite how small and unknown this village is, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself busy here. Go for an adventurous hiking trip. Spare the day going through various small souvenir, arts, and crafts shops. Or treat yourself with a Greek meal and drinks on the tavernas and other modern cafes open through the night.

One of the easiest ways to get to Chania is from the biggest nearby city Heraklion. There are good, but not very frequent, bus connections between Heraklion and Chania. If you wish to explore the hidden exotic beach Seitan Limania, lying down the hills off the town centre (about 20 minutes by car), take a taxi and don’t hesitate to ask people there to give you a lift back. Taxis in Greece are not so expensive, especially if you share the cost with friends.

Other destinations

With over a hundred islands, Greece is the sea paradise for all sorts of travellers, with endless exquisite destinations to offer, such as Corfu, Mykonos, Paros, etc. The country remains one of the most beautiful ones in Europe, with plenty of hidden gems to explore. Yet it’s not expensive at all to travel through Greece because of the current economic crisis. Now is the perfect time to travel in this top tourist-friendly country, before visitors start heading here during summer months.
