Set on a precipitous slope and surrounded by green hills that are the remnants of the largest stratovolcano in Europe, is the pretty town of Aurillac in south central France. Clues to Aurillac’s volcanic history are evident in the pinkish, gray houses and monuments made from basalt that was left from the lava flow. Today, Aurillac is a bustling commercial center with pedestrian-friendly narrow streets lined with shops, shady squares, cafes and an old town with beautiful 17th and 18th century houses. In the market hall of Hôtel-de-Ville you can find regional produce. Aurillac developed around the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Geraud and while there are no major historical monuments, it has several churches and buildings of interest (such as the Church of Saint-Géraud and Church of Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges). The Château de Saint-Étienne houses the volcano museum and from the Château’s terrace you can look down on the entire city. Aurillac is also devoted to the arts and hosts a street theater festival in August which attracts troupes from all over the world. If you find yourself visiting Aurillac, be sure to book one of these top Airbnb vacation rentals for an experience to remember!
