Visitors to Elvas in Portugal’s Portalegre region can be sure that they are spending their time in a place that has plenty of history to it - this town is one of the remaining examples of a form of fort-building known as “trace italienne”, or “star fort”. Seen from above, Elvas is indeed in the shape of a star. On the ground, there are examples here and there of Elvas’ history and its part in the Peninsular War, including the Castle of Elvas and the Amoreira Aqueduct. Above all, there is a charming town with plenty of Moorish architecture, which you’ll be happy to spend some time in - and there is also the chance, about 15 minutes away by car, to cross the border into Spain. Below, you can find out about our Top 10 Airbnb vacation rentals in Elvas, Portugal, and prepare for a wonderful trip.

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. 1. Stunning family farmhouse in Elvas (from USD 247)

If you hear the word “farmhouse”, and imagine a beaten-down shack with animals wandering in and out, stop and think for a moment. This is not your average farmhouse, as the pictures alone will show you. The accommodation itself is palatial, with a magnificent swimming pool to cool off in. Plenty of animals do live on site, but the owners employ groundskeepers to look after that side of things. You can relax, take a dip in the pool, befriend the dogs and enjoy three bedrooms in some of the finest style imaginable.
