Monsaraz is nestled on the Alentejo plains in the Évora District of Alentejo, near the border with Portugal’s neighbor, Spain. The tiny town is a walled medieval village, complete with an ancient archway leading into its cobbled streets. Walls are decorated with bougainvillaea and cars are banned during the day, making the streets easy to explore. In the surrounding countryside, you can see some megalithic monuments. Surprisingly, they haven’t been there all along. When they were building the Alqueva dam, authorities realized that many of the menhirs would have been lost to the water, so they were moved to an area close to the ruins of the Convento da Orada which sits below the town. More recent art can be seen in the Sacred Art Museum in Monsaraz. There is also a ceramics showroom in what was originally a school, close to the town’s castle.
