Oostduinkerke is a seaside resort town, located on the coast of West Flanders, in southwestern Belgium. The name translates in English to “East Dunkirk,” and, originally, the town shared the same name as the city of Dunkirk, in France. The name was changed in the 13th century to avoid confusion. The town lies in a protected nature reserve with walking trails and a beach with a promenade. This area is popular with parakarters and sand yachters.
Among other activities, Oostduinkerk is the only place in the world where shrimpers can be seen working on horseback. There are several museums of interest in the town, including the National Fishery Museum, which exhibits models of fishing boats over the years, dating from 800 AD to the present time. The Key and Lock Museum is also of interest, with exhibits of keys and locks dating back over 3,000 years.
