Based on the idea of building a quality low-cost accommodation for visitors to Turin, Tomato Backpackers Hotel was founded 3 years ago. It is an interesting cross of a hotel and hostel for not only backpackers but all sorts of travellers. The hotel’s building was built originally as a hotel. When the owner founded it, he created a new hostel atmosphere for it by adding the dorms and redesigning the interior, while still maintaining the hotel’s double and single beds. Nowadays, it is the temporary home to many foreigners and Italians coming for various concerts and shows happening all over the city.

At Tomato Backpackers Hotel, the staff totally emphasise sustainability whilst running their business. Their breakfast is made of local products including organic jam and apple juice, locally baked bread from a nearby bakery, butter, chocolate and coffee that are all locally produced. They use only LED lights in the shared areas, roof insulation and an efficient condensing boiler to reduce energy consumption. Plastic waste is also at a minimum here, as free water from a dispenser is offered instead of plastic bottles. All the window materials are PVC, which boost energy efficiency. In all the bathrooms, flow reducers in taps and showers, as well as soap and shampoo dispensers are installed. Recycling bins are placed on each and every floor of the hotel.
