Auberge is a French type of a restaurant with rooms for overnight stay. They’re usually located in suburbs or in the nature and you can eat various dishes with locally grown vegetables.
The Italian café and bar Ami-u is located close to Nasu-Kogen’s Lake Rindo. The owner of this auberge grows organically produced vegetables which are used for the Italian dishes served.
This inn was opened in Nasu in 2014, but the owner has 17 years of experience as a manager of Italian restaurants in Tokyo’s Kasai district and Chiba’s Kisarazu city. Every time he moves he takes with him the wooden pillars of the shop, so the current inn in Nasu has materials used in the previous restaurants. The large log pillars and the chairs are 15-year-old antiques and create a pleasant warm atmosphere in the shop.
Delicious Italian meals
Guests of this inn are served a special Italian menu which consists of vegetables grown in Nasu, where the temperature amplitude between day and night is very large, and other organically produced vegetables coming directly from a farm in Funabashi. The salad dressing is very popular among the customers and you can buy it as a souvenir.
The inn owner used to specialize in Japanese dishes, so now he inserts a bit of Japanese taste in the Italian food and makes everything much more appealing. The broth has a distinct odor of Japanese cuisine which is great for all kinds of customers.
Most of the items in the menu, such as the pasta and the omelette are the same as in the owner’s previous restaurant, but the pizza changed when he moved to Nasu. Special care is taken of the fermented dough and the pizza’s taste has now upgraded. You can try it in any of the set menus together with pasta.
For the main dish you can have a bit of meat and fish, or just one of them. For dessert you can choose from the daily menu written on the blackboard. Special occasions such as birthdays can be celebrated with a sponge-cake based birthday cake.
Only a few guests can stay at the inn so you will practically have the whole place for you on special occasions.
Staying overnight in the cute pink building
While in Tokyo’s Kasai district this place used to be just a restaurant, but when the owner moved to Nasu he changed it to an auberge inn where you can stay overnight as well.
What inspired him were the “relaxing trips” he began with his family 5 years ago. He developed a liking for relaxing holidays in which you can spend all your time in the hotel or inn without the need to go out.
In Kasai the restaurant was very busy and the owner could not provide the more relaxed and customized service he wanted, so he moved to Nasu and started offering personal service to customers. He added the accommodation facility so that his friends from Kasai can visit Nasu and stay overnight in a pleasant environment.
The building is pink and very cute. There is a small sports gym on the first floor where you can exercise. There’s even a massage table. Outside there’s a tennis court.
Freshly baked Italian panini for breakfast
Day trip visitors can enjoy lunch and dinner, but the breakfast is a special treat for the guests of the inn. You’ll be treated with freshly-baked panini toasts with salad and home-made smoked chicken, as well as a thick soup made of seasonal vegetables.
