Unique utensils museum

The main attraction at Vechaar is its museum of utensils. The idea was birthed by Surender Patel and is meant to promote and preserve the traditional heritage of the region through artisan crafts—in this case, utensils. These items are made from brass, copper, silver, ivory, and wood—some are even made from gold. Many of these utensils date as far back as thousands of years ago. Some notable items on display are nutcrackers, clay pots, gift boxes, and vessels such as glasses, jugs, and bottles. One distinct display is a bowl with the head of a snake, which many believe was used for mixing opium. The snake is meant to be a reminder of the dangers of opium. The designs of these items are also quite attractive as they depict symbols of the Sun God as well as animal prints like peacock patterns.

Quiet sanctuary and location

Veechar Museum has a unique location. Veechar, which stands for Vishalla Environmental Center for Heritage of Art, Architecture and Research, is located within Vishalla Village Restaurant on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. People usually come over to dine on good food, but few are aware of the presence of the museum. So while waiting for your order or after eating, you can browse through the interesting displays. Since it’s located outside the city center, Veechar Museum is somewhat a quiet sanctuary as well. It is housed inside a humble and quaint hut in the middle of trees, thus giving out a rural vibe. Furthermore, the displays of old pots, jars, and utensils will make you feel like you’re in a different era.

Best time to visit

The museum is open all year round, all days of the week except on Mondays. You can conveniently access the museum from 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Be mindful of the tourist crowds though. Just like many of the other attractions in Ahmedabad, people often flock to the city and its sights around October to March, which is the colder season.

Grab a meal

While at the museum, you might as well take advantage of the restaurant in which it is located—Vishalla Village Restaurant. The place serves the best of authentic Gujarati cuisine in a traditional and humble outdoor setting, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Many tourists come here mainly for the food and then, to their surprise, will discover the utensils museum later on. In short, being here is like hitting two birds with one stone!
