Udaipur is quickly becoming one of India’s most popular tourist destinations with people from around the country coming here to relax in the hills and take in the sights away from the hustle and bustle of the city. One of the coolest and more interesting places to visit in Udaipur is the Vintage Car Museum. The museum is owned by one of India’s most successful businessman and heir to the Mewar dynasty. The museum opened in February 2000 on a site that used to be a motor garage and although there is a selection of cars over 70 years old, every vehicle here is kept in working order. If you’re in Udaipur and want to visit the museum here is a guide to Vintage Car Museum.

The Vintage Car Museum showcases some of the coolest and most luxurious cars from a bygone era. Many of which are even pretty famous. One such popular one is a Cadillac convertible that once drove Queen Elizabeth II and a 1934 Rolls Royce featured in the James Bond film “Octopussy” which has many scenes shot here in Udaipur. The doors of the museum opened in 2000 and before then the area on which the museum now stands was once a garage that housed the royal Mewar family’s vehicles. In fact, many of the vehicles found here belonged to the Mewar family who are of the Rajasthani royal lineage.

Tour the museum

With an amazing selection of luxuriously customized antique cars and vintage vehicles, a stop at the Vintage Car Museum is a must for any car lover or aficionado. Guests on this tour will get to see some of the most prized cars in the collection which include 4 Rolls-Royces, 2 Cadillacs, an MG-TC convertible, a Ford-A convertible, and a Vauxhall-12, just to name a few. There is also a collection of rickshaws and other interesting cars as well. If you’re familiar with cars, you’ll probably notice that a few of these vehicles have been around since at least the 1930s and every vehicle here is kept in working condition. The area is semi-circular with stalls holding the cars so guests can walk around at their leisure and observe the cars for as long as they wish and since this was a former garage, everything here is in top shape including the vintage Shell Petrol Pump that they have on-site.

As previously mentioned, the museum opened in February 2000 and was inaugurated by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who opened a similar vintage car museum in England and while the museum is open to the public, the cars here belong the Mewar family with Rana Sri Arvind Singh Ji Mewar being the founder. So such not only is the museum an excellent resource for car lovers but it also offers a glimpse into the royal lifestyle of Rajasthan’s Mewar family.

Garden

After your stroll through the museum, why not take a relaxing break in the garden on site. The Garden Hotel is actually located on the same property as the Vintage Car Museum and is owned by the same people, so take a seat and enjoy the flowers and shade.

Eat

After a long day of walking through the museum and checking out the cars why not stop for something to eat? When you purchase your ticket to the museum, guests will also have the option to purchase a meal ticket which they can redeem at the onsite restaurant. Serving some great Rajasthani-style thali, having a quick bite to eat is a great way to end your day at the Vintage Car Museum.

When to go

The museum is open generally all year round with no fixed time when to go but if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and have as much space here as possible go during the off-hours of the tourist season. Generally between October and March is the best time to go.

Etiquette and safety

Due to the age and rarity of some of the vehicles, it is important that guests do not touch them. Some of the cars here can be observed up close but many of them require you to stay at a bit of a distance to see. This is also a security precaution.

Udaipur can get very hot and humid as well, and guests should know that there isn’t water available unless you head to the restaurant, to keep yourself hydrated, bring a water bottle with you.

The bus service in Udaipur is another option with the closes station to the museum being the Udaipur Bus Depot which is about 1 km (0.5 mi) away.
