Cameron Highlands’ tea plantations make 60% of all the tea for Malaysia. The area was named after, and founded by, Sir William Cameron, originally from Britain, in the 1800s. It is now the home of two main tea plantations: BOH and Cameron Valley Tea. The plantation grounds resemble those of rice paddy fields you find in Southeast Asia. Both of the plantations have acres of rolling hills filled with a variety of tea plants on a beautiful tiered-style garden. They cover 712 square kilometers of land (275 square miles). These breathtaking views are perfect for stunning photographs. The tea tastes pretty amazing too.

Take a free tour at BOH tea plantation

BOH plantation, founded in 1929, is the most popular tea among consumers in Malaysia and the largest black tea producer in Malaysia. Plan to spend 2 - 3 hours at BOH, as they have a plantation, shop and plenty of rolling hills to see while you are there. It is free to see the plantation and they also offer free daily tours showcasing how the tea is processed and packaged for distribution both locally and internationally. At the end you will find yourself sitting in the shop, drinking tea, eating cake and admiring the 8000 acres of tiered, rolling hills for hours without noticing the time passing by.

Drink a cup of signature masala tea while enjoying the view at Cameron Valley Tea House

Founded a few years after BOH, in 1933, Cameron Valley Tea is just as beautiful as BOH but is the lesser-known plantation. Cameron Valley Tea is free to enter and plan to spend 1 - 2 hours here walking the grounds. There are no tours of the plantation, but Cameron Valley Tea House has walkways where you can explore the tea fields. There’s also a waterfall near the bottom of the fields where there are benches to sit and take in the view. Even with only 1600 acres, the rolling hills are just as beautiful and are a lush green. Don’t miss out on getting masala tea in the tea house after you walk the grounds. This is their signature tea and is a cup of warm, spicy goodness. You might find yourself having two!

Harvesting leaves to make tea

Cameron Highlands Tea Plantations

The leaves are harvested every three weeks by machine, which gathers over 250 Kg (550 pounds) of greens. The leaves are then left out in a cool environment to dry. This allows the environment to reduce the moisture in the leaves by 50 percent. The leaves are then heated to remove any remaining moisture and to kill any bacteria that is left on the plant. They are then packaged and shipped off to stores to sell and are ready for consumption.

Take your favorite tea home with you

Both plantations have tea shops where you can purchase some of BOH’s signature black tea or Cameron Valley’s masala tea. You can also grab some of the other teas, such as white tea, green tea, and flavored teas that you might not find in stores back in your home country. With so many teas to choose from, you are sure to find one that you love.
