People visit Italy for many reasons: the delicious food and wine, the priceless pieces of art, the historic sites, and the gorgeous countryside attract millions of visitors every year. If you’re in a popular tourist destination like Rome or Florence, it can feel like you’re stuck with all of those tourists at once! A small city where you can experience all the best that Italy has to offer, without the crowds, is Spello. Located in Umbria, northeast of Rome, Spello is known for its olive oil production, a colorful Pinturicchio fresco inside the Santa Maria Maggiore church, and the Infiorate Festival where carpets of flowers are laid on the city streets. Spello is also a historian’s delight–the city dates back to pre-Roman times and still has much of its medieval architecture intact, including the walls and towers. It’s likely that you can even stay in one of these historic buildings, many of which are made of peach-colored marble and line windy cobblestone streets. Read on for some of our top picks of Vrbo vacation rentals in historic Spello, Italy.

6. Hilltop medieval escape
Spello is an ancient town predating the Roman Empire. You would be remiss to not stay in an authentically historic home while you’re here. This one is certainly a piece of history–the building dates back 500 years, though it has been fully refurbished with modern amenities and separated into several rental apartments. If you’re the lucky person who rents this flat, named the Augustus apartment, you will have direct access to the large garden, surrounded by walls that are 1,800 years old! It can sleep up to four guests and if more room is needed, can be combined with the Tiberius apartment if it is available.

8. Two-story apartment in a former cantina cellar
Once the cellar where the medieval homeowners used to make wine and press olives for oil, today the “cantina” is now a beautiful, spacious apartment where you can stay in a piece of history! The flat is spread out over two floors and with three bedrooms, it is spacious enough that up to six guests can stay here without feeling crowded. The tall, vaulted stone ceilings will remind you that this was once a cellar, but it feels sunny and airy instead of dark or damp. The accommodation is in a medieval home surrounded by a pretty garden overlooking the surrounding towns and hills–the perfect spot for having a local wine or morning espresso!

The closest you'll get to traveling back in time
Spello appears to be right out of a history book. However, there is much more to the city than its historic status. There are unique architecture and artworks and tasty food and wine options made with local ingredients. All of this is surrounded by stunning views of the Umbrian hills and towns which can be easily accessed by car or train. If you’re looking for a peaceful Italian destination where you can have a cultural experience without being bogged down by other tourists, Spello may just be the place for you.
