Editor’s Note: This attraction is now permanently closed.

Once known as Ootacamund, Ooty sprawls itself luxuriously on the Nilgiri hills in South India’s Tamil Nadu state. Rife with tea and coffee plantations along with various other attractions, the town enjoys quite a bit of tourist footfall. Travel about 2 km (1.2 mi) outside the main city and you’ll land yourself at the Wax World Museum, which is a wholly enjoyable place to visit for kids and adults alike. While it may be no Madame Tussauds in terms of scale, it is quite impressive in itself. Housed in a colonial-era mansion, it houses wax statues of some of the most emblematic figures of Indian history and culture. Here’s a guide to Wax World Museum, Ooty, that will tell you just what to busy yourself with.

Things to do

Click snaps with the statues

The museum has life-size wax statues of several Indian freedom fighters, such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Mahatma Gandhi. Additionally, those of icons, such as Chhatrapati Shivaji, Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, former US president Barack Obama, and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India. You can click tons of Insta-worthy snaps with them.

Learn the history of these icons

Placed beside each of the wax statues are informative placards that throw light on the history and context of the famous personalities. These placards are a great way to learn about the life and times of the icons. If not the placards, there are a few museum coordinators around to answer your questions.

Check out Indian village life

Part of the museum has been designated with wax statues depicting the way of life in a typical Indian village. Farmers and their livelihood is the main theme of this showcase.
