Located in the popular tourist destination of Mystic, Connecticut, Olde Mistick Village is a conveniently located outdoor shopping center. A destination in itself, Olde Mistick Village has recently seen a resurgence of cool small businesses opening up including restaurants, cafes, breweries, and shops. Especially beautiful during the holidays and summer months, Olde Mistick Village should be added to your itinerary whether you are local or visiting from afar.

Where to eat

Mac and cheese at Bleu Squid

Olde Mistick Village has a plethora of dining options, some definitely better than others. For an any time of day pick-me-up, Vault Coffee is my top pick as it serves the best espresso-based coffee drinks in the area. They also sell delicious baked goods and on the weekends source doughnuts from the popular Deviant Donuts, which is a local doughnut bakery.

For breakfast or lunch, head directly to the Bleu Squid, which is known for its “adult” grilled cheeses. The grilled cheeses at Bleu Squid are made with several different cheeses, making your sandwich gooey, flavorful, and rich with umami. I have to suggest the spinach grilled cheese, as the pesto and roasted garlic in that sandwich make it super tasty. If you don’t feel like a grilled cheese, the homemade mac and cheese is also to die for and includes bread crumbs sprinkled on the top. Don’t forget to save room for one of their homemade cupcakes, since these truly are the best in the area. Maybe even consider ordering a few to go!

If you happen to be visiting Olde Mistick Village around dinnertime, why not stop at the new brewery—Jealous Monk. This brewery and beer garden has an abundance of taps with homebrewed and locally brewed beers. In addition, they serve food that pair well with beer such as burgers, pretzels, and cheese and meat platters.

Where to shop

Shops at Olde Mistick Village

For local gifts, my favorite spot is Franklin’s General Store. Though it can be a bit pricey, Franklin’s carries homemade fudge in numerous flavors. They also have specialty foods that give you a taste of New England including saltwater taffy, jam, fruit butter, salsa, baking mixes, and alcohol. In addition, they carry local interest books and guides, t-shirts, and a small selection of toys.

If you are an avid home cook, you will definitely be interested in stopping into Gray Goose Cookery, a cooking store with probably anything you could ever want for your kitchen. This includes cook books, equipment, and even sauces, jams, and preserves.

For children, Olde Mistick Village has a great toy store called The Toy Soldier. This store carries toys of all kinds and for all ages. It also has a good selection of books and games.

What else to see

Pond area in Olde Mistick Village

In the center of Olde Mistick Village, visitors will find a duck pond with coin-operated bird seed dispensers. If you are visiting this shopping center with children, I recommend stopping by the duck pond to watch the birds swim by and perhaps purchase a serving of bird seed to throw to the birds. This area is very picturesque and also has several benches around it if you are in need of a rest.

Perhaps you are a movie buff and would like to close out your day of shopping and dining with a movie. Well, there is no need to leave Mistick Village, as it is the home to Mystic Luxury Cinemas. This movie theater offers a mixture of indie flicks and mainstream movies and also offers discount movie days on Wednesdays.

Visiting Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic is also home to the famous Mystic Aquarium (which shares a parking lot with Olde Mistick Village) and Mystic Seaport, so if you are visiting New England, you should definitely add Mystic to your itinerary. This town is great if visiting with children, as it offers numerous family-friendly things to do and is convenient to reach from both NYC and Boston.
