Which Countries Have Travel Bans And Lockdowns Due To COVID-19

With the World Health Organization declaring the coronavirus a pandemic, affecting 110 countries and counting, it is better to be well-informed and safe. A pandemic means not only one community is affected by a disease, but also many countries across the world — reaching more regions and continents. Due to the widespread reach of coronavirus, a lot of cities in the world are locking down, hoping to contain the virus and not causing any more deaths and problems in many sectors — especially in economy and tourism. As the virus with flu-like symptoms spreads rapidly, and only limited testing kits are available, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) have advised many countries to restrict non-essential travel. These are the existing travel bans you should be aware of:

?? Australia

  • March 18: An "indefinite ban" on foreign travel has been announced for citizens. Non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people are also banned.
  • March 19: Announced that all arrivals of non-residents will be banned from 9pm tomorrow (20 March 2020).
  • Travel and movement restrictions for most Australian territories.
  • Requiring Australians and permanent residents who return from other countries to self-isolate for a fortnight.

?? New Zealand

  • March 25: The country goes on a month-long lockdown. Residents are urged to stay indoors.
  • March 19: New Zealand placed a total ban on entry for all non-citizen or non-permanent residents.
  • Requiring visitors from all nations except the Pacific Islands to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

?? Belize

  • States that travelers who have been to a number of high-risk countries in the past 30 days will now be barred from entry.
  • Everyone entering Belize are required to undergo a mandatory quarantine.

?? Dominican Republic

  • March 19: all flights to and from the country is suspended.
  • All schools, entertainment centers, and tourist attractions are closed.
  • Any person coming from any of the countries would be quarantined on arrival.

?? Haiti

  • In a state of emergency with a nationwide curfew in effect.
  • All schools, religious establishments, and factories are closed.
  • Closed land borders with the Dominican Republic.
  • Closed ariports to all commercial flights.

?? Jamaica

  • March 15: Jamaica declared a state of disaster.
  • Travel restrictions have been imposed on visitors from Iran, China, South Korea, Italy, Singapore, Germany, Spain, France and the UK,
  • Anyone arriving from countries with community transmission will be required to go on 14 days of self-quarantine.
  • Citizens over 75 years old are told to stay at home.

?? Trinidad and Tobago

  • March 17: Closed borders to all tourists.
  • All arrivals to the country are told to self-quarantine for 14 days.

EU closing borders to most outsiders

Announced on March 17, Europe is closing its external borders to most non-residents for 30 days. This travel ban will “affect all non-EU nationals from visiting the EU bloc, except long-term residents, family members of EU nationals and diplomats, cross-border and healthcare workers, and people transporting goods.” This applies to 26 EU states including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Despite UK citizens being unaffected due to Brexit, they have been invited to join the closure of borders too.

The included member states of the EU are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

?? Albania

  • March 22: All commercial flights to and from the country are suspended, with the exception of humanitarian flights to Turkey.
  • Schools and other non-essential establishments are closed until the outbreak passes.
  • Extension of curfew from 5am to 1pm with bigger penalties for violators

?? Austria

  • April 1: People who are at a risk from COVID-19 will not be allowed to go to work. Hotels will be closed to tourists.
  • Travellers outside of the Schengen area will be prohibited from entering the country until further notice.
  • For travellers from the European Union (EU), a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine will be imposed upon entering Austria.
  • Much of Austria's land borders with Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy are blocked, with a few exceptions.
  • Required all of its citizens to self-isolate, with gatherings limited up to five people only.

?? Belgium

  • March 16: All schools, universities, and recreational areas are closed until April.
  • On lockdown until April 19.
  • Non-essential travel and gatherings are banned.

?? Bulgaria

  • On March 15, incoming flights from Italy and Spain will be banned at midnight (22:00 GMT) on March 17.
  • Bulgarians who return before the ban will have to face a 14-day quarantine.

?? Czech Republic

  • Declared 30-day state of emergency, with foreign nationals traveling from Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Norway, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, China, South Korea, Iran, and the UK banned from entering.
  • Extension of strict air and land border control with Germany and Austria until April 24.

?? Denmark

  • March 14: Borders will be closed to all international visitors until April 13, 2020. Danish citizens and residents however, will be allowed to return to the country.

?? Estonia

  • Closed its borders to anyone who isn't a citizen, resident or visiting their family in the country since 17 March.
  • Strict border checks are being enforced.
  • Those who have transited through high-risk countries must self-quarantine for 14 days.

?? France

  • March 23: Further restrictions were put in place. Exercise is allowed only for once a day and within a kilometer of one's own home.
  • March 16: A nationwide lockdown has been imposed for two weeks. Citizens can only go out to buy food and seek medical attention.
  • Though borders are closed, French citizens and residents are allowed to return home from abroad.

?? Germany

  • All schools and non-essential shops are closed.
  • Banned gatherings of three or more people.
  • On top of the ban on travel into the EU bloc, Germany has also temporarily closed its borders from Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

?? Greece

  • April 4: Extended its nationwide lockdown until April 27.
  • March 16: Closed its borders with Albania and North Macedonia.
  • All international arrivals must go on a 14-day self-quarantine.

?? Hungary

  • March 30: Hungary's parliament voted to give the country's prime minister, Viktor Orban, with emergency powers due to the ongoing pandemic.
  • March 11: Declared a state of emergency due to new cases of COVID-19 in the country.
  • All passengers arriving from high-risk quarantines are told to self-quarantine for 14 days.

?? Ireland

  • March 12: the country entered a period of a partial shutdown
  • Schools and cultural institutions are closed until March 29.
  • Most commercial establishments are closed.
  • Non-essential travel is prohibited, excluding Northern Ireland.

?? Italy

  • March 30: Italian authorities have announced an extension to the lockdown period due to the ongoing rise in cases and fatality rates.
  • March 22: further restrictions were put in place in Lombardy, one of the hardest-hit areas of the outbreak.
  • On lockdown since March 9, when a national quarantine was imposed as it is one of the worst-affected countries in the world.

?? Latvia

  • March 16: Closed all its borders
  • Organized international passenger transport by air, sea, and land will be suspended.

?? Malta

  • March 18: All incoming flights except for logistic, humanitarian, and repatriation purposes are banned.
  • All tourists and returning residents are required to self-quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

?? Netherlands

  • March 24: Extension of partial lockdown until June 1.
  • Bars, schools, restaurants, and gyms are closed.

?? Norway

  • Most establishments are closed until March 26.
  • Extension of lockdown until April 13.
  • Anyone arriving from outside the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, plus Greenland, Faroe Islands and Åland Islands) is being told to self-isolate for two weeks, regardless of whether they have symptoms or not.

?? Poland

  • March 15: Closed all borders
  • International rail and air transport have been suspended as well.
  • There's a 14-day self-quarantine rule for citizens returning from abroad.

?? Romania

  • March 21: Ban on all foreign visitors take place.

?? Russia

  • March 30: The government has placed all of Russia in a nationwide lockdown.
  • All foreign visitors are banned from entering Russia until May 1. Returning citizens from abroad are exempted.

?? Serbia

  • March 19: Closed all of its airports, road, and rail borders.
  • Walking and playing in parks are prohibited as well.

?? Slovakia

  • Slovakia is stopping all international travel to and from the country and introducing border checks.
  • All commercial establishments and schools are closed.

?? Slovenia

  • March 15: All shops excluding supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies, and banks were ordered to close.
  • Public transport was put to a halt.
  • Special travel advisories for Spain, Italy, Serbia, South Korea, US, China, and Iran were issued.

?? Spain

  • March 28: Still on lockdown, the country ordered all its non-essential service workers to stay at home.
  • Extension of lockdown until April 25.
  • The Spanish government declared a State of Emergency on 14 March, which includes restrictions on movement throughout the country from 16 March for 15 days.

?? Switzerland

  • All the schools are closed.
  • Banned gatherings of more than 100 people.
  • Numerous borders between Italy have been closed.

?? United Kingdom

  • March 30: Authorities warn of an extended lockdown that can last up to six months.
  • March 24: The whole country is put on a three-week lockdown, closing down all non-essential shops.
  • March 17: The government advised people to avoid non-essential travel.
  • Gatherings of three or more people are banned.

?? Argentina

  • Suspending all flights from the UK, Europe, the US, China, Japan, South Korea, and Iran.
  • Non-residents transited through countries mentioned will be barred from entry.

?? Bolivia

  • Officials are to suspend flights to and from Europe.
  • Those from China, South Korea, Italy, and Spain are banned from entry.

?? Brazil

  • On March 19, a 15-day restriction has been placed on foreign visitors at land borders with Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Suriname, and French Guiana.
  • The restriction will not affect foreigners with permanent residence in Brazil, diplomats, and international agency officials, as well as trucks transporting goods.

?? Canada

  • Most provinces have implemented closures of non-essential services.
  • Announced on March 16 that it is closing its borders to non-citizens and non-residents. US citizens were previously exempted from this restriction. However, it was later announced that the exemption was removed for Americans.
  • On March 18, the US and Canada have announced that they will be closing their borders to all non-essential traffic.

?? Chile

  • Borders will be shut to non-resident foreigners from March 18.
  • Citizens returning from highly infected regions are required tol undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

?? Colombia

  • Travelers who have been to Europe or Asia in the past 14 days are barred from entry.
  • Residents of the country are still permitted entry but must self isolate for 14 days.

?? Costa Rica

  • Borders will be closed to all international visitors from 18 March 2020.
  • A mandatory 14-day quarantine will be imposed on citizens and residents.

?? Ecuador

  • Visitors from France, China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Spain, Germany, USA (Washington, New York, Massachusetts, and California), Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands have been told to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

?? Guatemala

  • Citizens from Eurореаn соuntrіеѕ, Іrаn, Сhіnа, Ѕоuth Коrеа, and the Democratic People's Republic of Коrеа are banned from entering.

?? Honduras

  • All border access in the country has been ordered to close except for cargo purposes.

?? Panama

  • Entry of non-residents have been banned since 16 March 2020. Anyone (Panamanian or foreign resident) entering the country will be subjected to mandatory 14-day home quarantine.

?? Paraguay

  • All direct flights to and from Europe are canceled from 13 March up to and including 26 March.

?? Peru

  • Suspending all flights from Europe and Asia for at least 30 days.

?? United States

  • March 20: the US and Mexico agreed to place a 30-day restriction for non-essential travel over their shared border.
  • March 18: the country closed its northern border with Canada to non-essential traffic.
  • President Trump has banned entry to the US for foreign nationals who have visited China, European countries, Iran, Ireland, and the UK in the last two weeks.
  • Travel ban on 26 European countries for 30 days.

?? Uruguay

  • The government announced that all flights from Europe will be banned from Friday 20 March 2020.

?? Algeria

  • Air and sea travel with Europe have been suspended from March 19.
  • Flights with Morocco, Spain, France, and China have been halted by authorities previously.

?? Ghana

  • Foreign visitors who have travel history to affected countries with more than 200 cases in the last 14 days will be banned from entering Ghana.
  • Anyone entering Ghana is required to undergo self-quarantine.

?? Kenya

  • Anyone from any country with coronavirus will be banned from entering Kenya for 30 days from 17 March.
  • Kenyan citizens and residents will need to self-quarantine for 14 days.

?? Madagascar

  • From March 20, commercial passenger flights to and from Europe will be restricted for 30 days.
  • Travellers arriving from affected countries will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

?? Morocco

  • Suspending flights to 31 countries including the UK.
  • Ferry links between Morocco and Spain and Gibraltar are suspended. Land borders with Ceuta and Melilla have also been closed.

?? South Africa

  • Visitors from a number of countries affected by coronavirus will be banned from entering the country starting 18 March. The list includes the United States, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Anyone who's entered South Africa since mid-February from this list will need to go through testing.
  • Those who have traveled through any of these destinations in the last 20 days are also banned from entry, and their visas will be revoked. Those from Portugal, Hong Kong, and Singapore will be required to go through high-intensity screening.

?? Brunei

  • Announced on 15 March that citizens and foreign residents in the country are banned from leaving Brunei.

?? Cambodia

  • Visitors from the US, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will not be allowed to enter Cambodia from 17 March for 30 days.

?? China

  • April 8: Restrictions for travel outside Hubei will be lifted
  • Eased restrictions in Hubei after cases plateaued.
  • Beijing: All international visitors are required to go through a 14-day quarantine notice.
  • Rest of China: Visitors from Iran, Italy, Japan or Korea who are traveling to Beijing, Guangzhou, or Shanghai are required to go through a 14-day quarantine.

?? Hong Kong

  • All arrivals in Hong Kong are subjected to 14-day home quarantine starting midnight on March 19. These restrictions will not apply to arrivals from Mainland China, Macau and Taiwan.
  • Residents from Hubei Province have been banned from entering Hong Kong

?? India

  • March 24: A nationwide lockdown was implemented that will last for three weeks
  • March 22: All international flights to and from India are banned for weeks.
  • Those arriving having visited China, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Spain will be put into a 14-day quarantine.

?? Japan

  • No plans to declare a national emergency, but the country will ban the entry of tourists coming from USA, Europe, China, and South Korea.
  • The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been postponed to 2021 due to increasing pressure from other countries as well as health considerations.

?? Malaysia

  • Total ban on Malaysians traveling overseas and foreigners entering the country from March 18 to March 31.
  • Those who return from overseas will have to go through health checks and observe a 14-day self-quarantine notice.

?? Myanmar

  • Travelers who recently visited France, Italy, Iran, Spain, and Germany will be placed into the government's quarantine facilities on arrival for 14 days.
  • Those who have been to the US will be under surveillance for 14 days.
  • Travelers coming from China or South Korea will be banned from entry.

?? Philippines

  • April 2: Planned extension of lockdown to 15 days as cases continue to rise.
  • Luzon is placed in a month-long lockdown that shall end on April 12.
  • Imposed a travel ban for all foreign nationals coming from countries with local transmissions of coronavirus.
  • A land, air, and sea travel restriction is also in place.

?? Singapore

  • April 7: Total lockdown begins.
  • March 22: Singapore has banned all short-term visitors from entering the country.
  • Visitors who have traveled to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Mainland China (except Hubei Province) within the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter or transit through Singapore. Singapore residents and long-term pass holders will require to serve the 14-day stay-home notice.
  • Visitors or Singapore residents with travel history in the last 14 days to ASEAN countries will have to undergo the 14-day stay-home notice.
  • Visitors or Singapore residents with travel history in the last 14 days to Japan, Switzerland and the UK will have to undergo the 14-day stay-home notice. This excludes land and sea travel from Malaysia.
  • Singaporeans are advised to defer all non-essential travel to all countries.

?? Sri Lanka

  • People arriving from the UK or who have traveled through the UK will not be allowed into the country from 16 March.
  • A ban on all passenger flights and ships to and from the country has been placed indefinitely.

?? Taiwan

  • All visitors entering Taiwan will have to undergo 14 days of home quarantine.
  • Taiwan will ban most foreigners from entering its borders. This excludes foreign resident permit holders and diplomats.

?? Thailand

  • Thailand has suspended its visa exemption policy for travelers from Hong Kong, South Korea, and Italy.
  • Visas on arrival are to be stopped for 18 countries: Bulgaria, Bhutan, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Malta, Mexico, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, and China.
  • Nationwide curfew from 10pm to 4am.

?? Vietnam

  • From 15 March, foreign nationals will be refused entry if in the previous 14 days they have been to the UK, or any Schengen country, even in transit. This restriction will be in place for 30 days.

  • Banned all tourists, including those from the UK.
  • Arriving tourists are to go into state quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

?? Egypt

  • Suspending all incoming and outbound flights for two weeks starting from March 18.

?? Israel

  • March 9: All visitors and returning citizens are required to serve a 14-day quarantine notice.
  • Parts of the country are subject to lockdown.
  • Partial shutdown is imposed on the country, with non-essential public places being temporarily closed.
  • All citizens are urged to stay in their own homes.

?? Jordan

  • March 27: Irbid City is placed under lockdown.
  • Land and sea borders are closed from 17 March 2020.
  • All international flights have also been suspended.
