Of the three Indonesian Gili islands, Gili Air is for many people the “just right” one. Less party people than Gili Trawangan, but still busy enough to keep you entertained, especially compared to Gili Meno, which is downright sleepy - and does not have direct boat service either. Right along the beach on Gili Air, you will find 7SEAS Cottages, a mid-luxury, spacious home to call your own on this little dot of island bliss between Bali and Lombok islands.
Your cottage, complete with exterior front door and private yard
It doesn’t get too much more secluded than this on Gili Air, with a private entry to your cottage just off the main road. Don’t be put off by the “main road” label though; with no motorized vehicles on the island, the main road noise is generally not much more than the passing of a horse cart. Just across from your room is the hotel’s beachfront restaurant, which is just the start of a string of restaurants that line the coast.
The hotel’s restaurant: A great place to start your day with the included breakfast
The shady dining room is where you’ll go each morning for the included, cooked to order breakfast. Take advantage of the bountiful tropical fresh fruit to be found all over the Gilis, with mango, papayas, and bananas being particularly delicious. Be aware that “local coffee” means coffee grounds at the bottom of your cup, which may take some getting used to. Incidentally, the restaurant is also a great place for happy hour, with large, well-chilled bottles of Indonesia’s Bintang Beer on offer for only 30,000 IDR (about 2 USD) between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
Your spacious bedroom, complete with mosquito net
On the plus side, the high-ceilinged room is spacious, air-conditioned, and comes with a refrigerator and in-room safe. On the not-so-plus side, the air conditioning faces defeat against midday heat, resulting in a pretty warm room no matter how cold you set the temperature. There is water in the refrigerator, but it is not free, which seems like a pretty tightwad thing to do in a country where you can’t drink the water. Buy your water and snacks at one of the nearby convenience stores (the term “store” being used loosely here). You’re going to find bugs, lizards, and maybe more in the room, but such is island life.
Have you always dreamed of a giant bathroom?
The bathroom is almost comically large (probably half of it is not in frame here), so you will certainly not feel cramped by space constraints. The shower head - or is that just a sawed-off pipe? - leaves something to be desired, but hot water is plentiful. Soap and shampoo are provided, but they are one in the same here, so don’t get too excited. Speaking of provisions, you get two towels per room, which is something to keep in mind when you take one to the beach.
Outside the room, a shady area to relax
Reading a book or just kicking back on the shady veranda outside is a very pleasant way to pass the time. It’s also handy for drying clothes, or receiving guests. See how high class you can be? A place to receive guests!
Keep your expectations in check and you will enjoy the 7SEAS Cottages
At first blush, 7SEAS cottages seems like a luxurious island escape. It’s not. But if you are looking for a place that is spacious, just off the beach, and not too expensive, it can fit the bill quite nicely.
7SEAS Cottages Cottages from 750,000 IDR (55 USD), including breakfast for two. Note that there is a hostel, and non-cottage portion to the hotel as well.
