Kuching, Malaysia

The capital of the Malaysian province of Sarawak and one of the most interesting cities on the large island of Borneo, Kuching is a fantastic base for exploring many of the nearby natural and cultural delights. There are also some great things to see and do in the city itself.

Often referred to as the City of Cats, due to the translation of its name from Malay, you’ll notice many cat statues, in all positions and sizes, around Kuching.

Stroll along the riverside during the day and enjoy the views, and then visit again in the evening for a great selection of local dishes from numerous street carts. Buy colourful souvenirs and handicrafts along the lively Main Bazaar, and have fun enjoying the city’s diverse museums. They include the Sarawak Museum / Ethnology Museum, the Art Museum, the Islamic Museum, the Chinese History Museum, and, naturally, the Cat Museum.

The city is home to several historical and religious buildings, such as Tua Pek Kong Temple, Kuching Town Mosque, the Square Tower, and Astana. Take a trip to the Sarawak Cultural Village and learn more about the different ethnic groups that call Sarawak home, and visit areas of stunning natural beauty, such as Bako National Park and Gunung Gading National Park.
