Useful tips

  • As Malaysia sits near the equator, the weather here is unpredictable. So be sure to bring an umbrella with you everywhere!
  • While ATMs (cash points) are widely available in the country's major cities, the chance of you finding an ATM in the countryside is zero to none! So stock up on your cash if you're planning to visit the smaller cities!
  • Skip the expensive restaurants and cafes and fill your tummies with the variety of street food available. Plenty of delicious street food is available within arm's length of each other, and you'll be spoilt for choice with the different cuisines here.
  • Dress modestly - many of Malaysia's gorgeous attractions include cultural and religious sites, and it's considered polite to dress modestly when visiting. The same goes when visiting the different villages - avoid too revealing outfits to respect the local religious sensitivity.
  • Don't worry if you can't speak the local language! Most locals are fluent in English, especially in major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
