Scarsdale, New York, is a village located north of Manhattan, in Westchester County. Gaining recognition from the Japanese in the early 90s, Scarsdale is known for its ease of living as well as its large population of Japanese expatriates. Apart from its diverse population, it is also known for its charming and spacious homes, tight knit community, and small town feel. Just 45 minutes from Manhattan, by the Metro-North train, Scarsdale is a comfortable and convenient place to live and visit. Read on to learn more about the best things to do in the area!

1. Cudner-Hyatt House

Cudner-Hyatt House is a historic 19th-century home that was built before the American Revolution and is a prime example of the earliest pre-Revolutionary farmhouses. It was saved from demolition in the 1980s which helped form the Scarsdale Historical Society, which curates the historic home to this day.

After being saved from demolition, the house was converted into a museum that showcases not only Scarsdale’s rich history but also a glimpse of how the American colonists once lived before the revolution.

2. Weinberg Nature Center

Dedicated to the memory of his family, Wilhelm Weinberg donated a plot of land to the Village of Scarsdale which would become Weinberg Nature Center. This center aims to promote the appreciation and study of conservation and the natural sciences. This is done through various school programs, summer camps, and animal rehabilitation programs.

It also holds several events like gardening classes, Animal Scholar series, and native planting events. There are also three nature trails where visitors can take a relaxing walk or jog and enjoy the beautiful landscape.

This family owned bakery is the place to buy everything for your sweet tooth cravings. Galloway’s Bakery has been in business for over 60 years, with no signs of stopping. From pies to donuts, they do it all. Given the title of the “Best Food and Drink in Westchester”, by Westchester Magazine, Galloway’s Bakery has been mentioned in a myriad of publications, such as the New York Times and Lohud Food Blog. It is certainly a favorite amongst locals and visitors alike. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until the weekend to buy their delicious top crust pies as Galloway’s is only open from Friday through Sunday.

4. Scarsdale Municipal Pool

Take a dip in the pool during the hot, summer months. Scarsdale Municipal Pool is open all summer, until the beginning of September. Members of the pool can leisurely visit the pool or they can participate in a special event. Children attending camp in the Scarsdale area have the option of being bussed to Scarsdale Municipal Pool for after camp activities, which include swimming, sports, and games. They also host birthday parties, in which guests have a private portion of the pool to use for 90 minutes. Last but not least, families and friends will enjoy the fireworks show at the pool. Entrance is just 2 USD if you arrive after 5:00 pm.

The private, Quaker Ridge Golf Club is more than just a facility for playing golf. With tennis courts, a pool, and clubhouse, members at this club will feel pampered at this 18 hole course. Quaker Ridge Golf Club is also known for hosting a number of tournaments, including the Walker Cup, the Metropolitan PGA Championships, and the Metropolitan Open.

Take a walk on the wild side, at the 33 acre (13.5 hectare) Greenburgh Nature Center, a non-profit nature reserve, located in Scarsdale. Take a journey through one of five different nature trails, while observing the wildlife of the forest. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as all trails are unpaved. After finishing the trails, head over to the Manor House, where you will have an up close and personal experience with some of the animals. Learn about birds of prey, visit the barnyard animals, and go inside of a wigwam at the Native American Village. Inside the Manor House, there are two floors of indoor live animal exhibits, where visitors are allowed to touch some of the animals.

Great Play of Scarsdale is a fun, interactive gym, for children from the ages of 6 months to 10 years old. Toddlers will participate in the “directed play” program, in which they learn social skills, preschoolers participate in activities, such as Zumba and soccer, that aid in developing motor skills, and school age children participate in competitive and non-competitive sports and athletics. Parents can also choose from a list of themed birthday parties, to create a one-of-a-kind experience for their child’s special day.

10. Hyatt Field

Named one of Westchester’s best playgrounds, Hyatt Field is a great place to bring the kids to play. Having undergone renovations in 2016, the kid’s playground has plenty of structures to climb, a zip line, and plenty of smooth surfaces to ride bikes on. Children of all ages will enjoy playing here. Make sure to visit the large baseball field for a short game or the small baseball field for a game of catch.
