While the formal gardens are the focus for this park, Washington Oaks is also celebrated for being the unique shoreline of coquina rock formations that mark the Atlantic Beach. Snuggled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River, this property was on one occasion owned by a distant relative of President George Washington. The gardens were established by Louise and Owen Young, who purchased the land in 1936 and constructed a winter home. They named it Washington Oaks and, in 1965, donated most of the property to the State.

The gardens make remarkable use of native and exotic species, from azaleas and camellias to the exquisite bird of paradise, protected within a scenic oak hammock. Guests can picnic and fish from either the beach or the seawall along the Matanzas River. Several short trails deliver opportunities for hiking and bicycling. 10. Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park

The 150 acres (60 ha) of Bulow Plantation Ruins stand as a testament to the rise and fall of sugar plantations in East Florida. In 1836, the Second Seminole War brushed away the prosperous Bulow Plantation where the Bulow family grew sugar cane, cotton, rice and indigo. Wrecks of the former plantation, a sugar mill, a unique spring house, several wells and the crumbling foundations of the plantation house and slave cabins, show how volatile the Florida frontier was in the early 19th-century.

Today, a scenic walking trail leads visitors to the sugar mill ruins, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The park has picnic facilities and an explanatory center that tells the plantation’s history. A boat ramp offers admission for canoes and small powerboats to scenic Bulow Creek, a designated state canoe trail. Anglers can fish from the dock or a boat.

It’s still the same beach as it was back then, with thick orange coquina sand and rollicking surf and a campground within earshot of the melodic waves. Nature trails wind under the thicket of windswept oaks, and you can drop a line in the Intracoastal or watch ibises pecking across the mud flats. This Flagler point of interest is a prime nesting beach for 3 species of sea turtles from May thru September.
