Possibly cliché, but probably true, Jerusalem’s nightlife is as shy as it is vibrant. During the day, the city of 70 nicknames is a mix of cultures and civilizations, of tolerance and struggles, of acceptance and faiths. Are the proportions preserved during the night, when people should be out there seeking to have fun and should not have anything else on their minds? Let me try to explain myself in the following lines. What could you do after dark in Jerusalem? Discover here the best things to do in this enigmatic city.

1. Exploring Nahalat Shiv’a

This trendy and hip neighborhood probably holds the highest concentration of pubs, bars, and joints – filled with youngsters – in the whole of Jerusalem. While many of the art galleries framing the streets may not be open at late hours, simply gazing at their windows will do. It will induce a certain charm that this third neighborhood built outside of the city’s walls holds. History does not necessarily mean ruins but also walls full of personality, a tale-telling line.

2. Night tasting tours

I am a vegetarian and Israel is comfortably seated in my Top 5 Culinary Destinations. Everything that I tried there was delicious, fresh, and filling. I am sure that the same goes for all meat lovers out there. So, for those ‘freshmen’ in Israeli cuisine, such a tour does sound educating… and tempting! Be it pastries, meats, spices, or fruit – we shouldn’t forget that, despite being Mediterranean at their base, Israeli dishes have received many influences throughout the centuries, most of which endured and turned them into the special experience that they currently are!

3. Midnight biking

What an interesting – and seemingly relaxing – approach to exploring and understanding Jerusalem, isn’t it? Discover the peace and the magic on a 3-hour journey through the alleys of the Holy City! Designed for intermediate riders, perfect for entire families or team building events, the tour is led by an experienced guide and can be conducted either in English or in Hebrew.

4. Taking pictures

Have you ever thought about the differences that light casts upon a place? About the bright structures that could become mysterious at night? Well, you’ve got your camera with you, I bet. How about an expedition? I am only thinking of a couple of hours. Enough for… tasting the scene? Tap dancing your way around eye-catching elements? When is love for a place about to flourish? When you realize that you embrace it with the same level of passion, day or night.

5. Escape Room

Four years ago, Central Europe fell under the siege of these great ways of spending time with one’s friends. Do you remember ‘Fort Boyard’, that fortress surrounded by the sea, where riddles were meant to be broken and escape ways were meant to be found? The TV show was the start, I guess. On a lower scale, you are simply locked inside a space and generally given 60 minutes to escape using your imagination, creativity, and intelligence. There are room escape games based on only one room (where clues are condensed and harder to find) and then there are room escape games based on connected rooms (where playfulness reaches centre stage and running from one room to the other becomes the norm). Themes also play an important part. What next? Relax, link, do the math, and enjoy your mystery night with those dear to you. Choose from several attractions of this type in Jerusalem, the offer is enticing.

6. Live Music

Of course, you can find bars and pubs with live music nights, but if you want to hit a larger scale, there’s always Sultan’s Pool. Originally an ancient water basin modernised by Suleiman the Magnificent, this is the place for the largest of concerts and for a plethora of festivals and events. Opera shows, ethnic music, rock performances, mixing the past and the present, huh? It does sound like a treat! P.S. This place seems to have its own micro-climate, making it really cool to hang in there even after a gruelingly hot summer’s day. Take your jacket and/or blanket along!

7. Bar/pub crawling

There are plenty of options to fill out your crawl. But if we are talking about specifics, why not try Mike’s Place out? This American style sports bar/live music venue is probably the most popular expat hangout in Jerusalem. Live shows are on every night (except for Mondays – when there’s an Open Mic Night, and Fridays – when it’s closed for Shabbat). Entrance is free, the staff are friendly, and the food and drinks are great.

8. Karaoke

When you’re out to karaoke, that’s not a regular night. Some need courage, others need a drink, only a few are truly gifted. Off the Wall is one of those places that may either relieve the tension… or increase it. It attracts both locals and tourists due to its location and also operates as a comedy club. Or possibly as the debutant stage of an undiscovered talent.

9. Clubbing

Editor’s note: Establishment is permanently closed

Let’s face it! Even clubbing is not the same everywhere on the planet! Different etiquette, outfits, habits… it all depends on your hosting nation. The Justice promises a world-class clubbing scene, with the latest sound systems and lighting technologies, a carefully selected drinks menu, and a modern and inviting design. Up to 350 clubbers can dance their way into the night at a time there. Needless to say that the most famous Israeli DJs regularly make their appearance in the club’s booth, ready to deliver a great show for an unforgettable party.

A night to remember

Small, but very diverse! I am sure many of my friends would like to enjoy at least one night out in Jerusalem. Why don’t you ask yours? You may be on your way to Israel and don’t know it just yet.
