In South Korea’s third largest city for the weekend and don’t know where the party is? You aren’t alone! Head to the metro stop Bawoldang exit 13 and follow this road straight into the pedestrian shopping and restaurant mecca that is downtown Daegu. Among these streets is one infamous street, known to locals only as ‘Bar Street.’ While this street has tons of bars, clubs and things to see, here are a few places worth checking out and staying at for the ultimate night out in Daegu. Luckily for you, they are all very close together so hopping from one to another will be no problem! Here is a local’s top five places to hangout, make new friends and drink on the cheap in Daegu.

1. Kiki's

Upon entering bar street, this is the first bar you will see on your right hand side. It is black with large glass windows, and another large window for outside/to go ordering. You can head inside if you want to stay a while. Opening at 6 pm, this is the place to go when you are on a budget but still looking for strong drinks and good dancing music! The locals call this one of the ‘bag places’ because they serve 99% of their alcoholic drinks in plastic ‘to go’ drinking bags. There is a huge variety of drinks to choose from, be it rum based, vodka based, tequila based or even milk based. The main bartender here is Russian, she speaks English, Korean and Russian and she makes a killer Adios. Most of their mixed bag drinks are 5,000 KRW (4 USD) plus they also have a punch card so you can earn free drinks after a couple visits. A good overall bar to hangout and start the night off before you hit the clubs later on once they open.

Kiki's

Address: 동성로3길 58-19, Daegu

Price: from 5,000 KRW / 4 USD

Opening Hours: 5 pm to 4 am (weekends) 6:00 PM to 1:30 AM (weekdays)

2. Club Bread

Down the street from Kiki’s lies Club Bread. This place is spinning a variety of pop, hiphop, electronic and 90’s dance music — all American music. Come here to find a more varied type of people, mostly tourists, from all over world. Girls are free, boys are 5,000 KRW (3.5 USD). The space is a bit bigger and made for dancing, as it has a huge open floor concept going on in its basement club area. There is only one small bar, but sometimes when the DJs do promotions for liquor they will give out free shots if you are near them. If you get tired, you can take a seat in the few couch chairs they have available, but there aren’t many to be had. Drinks are reasonably priced here but don’t expect any club in Daegu to be as cheap as Kiki’s or Gogo’s for drinks.

3. Club Valv

If you are into American hip hop music, then this is your club. Think Chris Brown, Usher, Jeremiah and the like being played at this local establishment. The entrance to this club is a bit hidden, but the sign is huge and hard to miss. After going down a steep set of stairs you are already inside this small venue. Girls are free (Korean or foreign) but boys usually have to pay 5,000 KRW (3.5 USD) to enter. If you are visiting Daegu and want to meet some Korean men or woman into this type of music, this is a great place for mingling. Keep in mind even though this is a small venue, it will also be very dark inside, so hold on to your stuff, be careful if you come in a group not to lose them, and watch who you are dancing with! Otherwise, hands down this club wins for best music all night long.

4. Gogo’s

Known as the ‘original bag drink place,’ this tiny bar is around the corner from the well-known bar street in downtown Daegu. Their prices are on point with 5,000 KRW (3.5 USD) bag drinks, tons of variety of drinks and they serve pretzels while you sip your drink. The music here is more varied, hip hop, pop and rock, but the crowd is consistently tourists. There are only about eight seats to sit here, so I suggest you come when it opens around 6:30 so you can get a seat for you and your date, or friends. It will get packed later in the evening so use this as a benchmark to start your night or take a drink to go for cheap using their outside to go window. It is completely legal here in Daegu to take your alcoholic bag drink outside and walk around with it. Glass and materials with alcoholic contents do have regulations though, so if unsure ask the bartenders here — they are usually foreign and will speak English.

Gogo's

Address: 중구 공평동 62번지 고고비닐; Daegu

Price: from 5,000 KRW / about 4 USD

Opening Hours: 6 pm to 3 am (weekends)

5. Kiki 2 club

If you love the concept of the cheap bag drinks but also want a more real club like atmosphere, head to Kiki’s new venture, Kiki’s 2 Club. If you are already at Kiki’s drinking, you can ask for them to bring your group over to Kiki 2 once it hits 9 pm. The owner is a really nice Korean woman who is friendly, speaks English and will be happy to have someone escort you a couple minutes to get there. Also, as of right now, there is no cover charge!

Situated around the corner from bar street, on the 3rd floor, you will find this dark, pole ridden club space. There is tons of space here to dance the night away, and for 5,000 KRW (about 4 USD) drinks and shots, you will be having fun in no time! If you get tired, they do have normal club tables you can sit at if you get there early enough. The space includes two bars, several lounge areas with pole dancing areas next to them and a dance floor in the back. Keep in mind the crowds may not show up until closer to 11 pm if you are looking for a wild night. They have lockers for holding all your stuff for a reasonable price and it is located near the bathrooms just in case you are planning to be up all night!
