Bolnuevo, found in the municipality of Mazarrón, is a lovely destination for those who are looking for some peace and quiet. What makes this place even better is that Cartagena and Puerto de Mazarrón are easily accessible from here. Since the village is located on the coast, coming here to hang out and admire the mesmerizing landscapes was a great choice. I wanted a quick vacation, and this was the perfect spot. One of the most popular sites here is Gredas de Bolnuevo, which was always brought up whenever I asked about Bolnuevo. Aside from Playa de Bolnuevo, this village has many more beaches that I wanted to explore. Plus, it has plenty of restaurants that serve good food and offer serene views of the horizon.

If you too would like to enjoy a fulfilling trip to Bolnuevo, keep reading for the list of things one can do when they spend a weekend in Bolnuevo, Mazarrón.

Saturday

Go jogging around Bolnuevo

Thanks to Bolnuevo’s lovely weather, jogging around was a breeze. Since it was my first time here, I wanted to look around first to see what I could do within a day. I didn’t encounter a lot of people or cars on the road, making it easy to explore the village. It was also very interesting to see the different houses in front of the beach.

What made jogging around Bolnuevo even more inspiring was the view of the mountains in the backdrop.

Visit Torre de los Caballos

Torre de los Caballos is a watchtower that has been around since the 16th century. Hence, it has a very interesting history. It was the first place I visited as soon as I arrived. While I was here, I attended a short but very informative tour. I found out that this watchtower was used to alert people whenever pirates were coming. It was restored around the 18th century and is now accompanied by Ermita de la Purísima Concepción, a church that was built in dedication to La Purísima Concepción.

What makes this tower even more interesting is that it offers views of the entire village and even the mountains behind it. Even when the tour ended, I stayed on the rooftop just to take photos.

To top it all off, this attraction is open to the public at no additional cost.

Have lunch at La Bar de las Redes

After I visited the Torre de los Caballos and walked around, I started looking for a place to have lunch. Fortunately, I happened to pass by La Barra de las Redes. It has tables located outside on both sides of the road. There are also a few tables inside, but I ate outside so I could enjoy the weather.

I started with some croquettes. I got to try the prawn, cuttlefish, and boletus, which is a type of mushroom here. I had to stop myself from ordering more because of how delicious they all were, especially the boletus croquette. Then, I had octopus paella, which was also very tasty. It was probably one of the best paellas I ever had. I also had a refreshing cup of sangria to go with my meal.

Go on a trip to Puerto de Mazarron

After lunch, I recommend taking a nine-minute car ride from Bolnuevo to Puerto de Mazarron. I only got to pass by it briefly while on the way to Bolnuevo, but it certainly piqued my interest. One of the best spots to visit here is Mirador Cabezo del Gavilán, a serene observation deck where you can take a stroll while admiring the sea. From here, people can also visit different beaches, such as Playa de Bahía and Playa del Rihuete.

The next time I come here, I want to visit Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, which is an elevated statue of Jesus on a hill.

Enjoy some wine at Restaurante Terramar

This restaurant and bar is only a few minutes’ walk from the beach. They serve a variety of meat, salad, paella, and fish. When going to the beach, I prefer eating seafood since I’m by the sea. However, even though I wanted to try their seafood, I got drinks instead.

They serve a variety of wines that you can partner up with their starters. I had a glass of one of their white wines to end my day on a good note.

Relax on the sands of Playa de Bolnuevo

The 1,600-meter (5,249.34-foot) Playa de Bolnuevo offers more than enough space for people to lounge around. When I went there in December, the water was very cold, which meant it wasn’t ideal to swim. However, the weather was perfect for hanging out in the sun. It was warm but not too hot, and I wanted to spend the whole day lying down on the sand. I bought some snacks and drinks from a nearby store so I could eat and drink while enjoying the sun on my skin. Once in a while, I would take a dip in the water.

There are some toilets conveniently placed throughout the beach and walkways for those who just want to walk around without getting sand in their shoes.

There are also restaurants near and on the beach, so I didn’t have to travel far for some coffee or lunch.

Take photos along the beach rocks

At the end of Playa de Bolnuevo is a rocky area that resembles a steep cliff. I wanted a place where I could take some unique photos to post on social media, and this area immediately grabbed my attention. It wasn’t too hard to navigate, but I still had to be careful since the sea was right below the rocks.

The rocks have different heights and sizes, so anyone who wants to check out this area can do a variety of poses.

Check out Las Gredas de Bolnuevo

One of the most popular attractions—if not the most popular attraction—in this village are the Las Gredas de Bolnuevo sculptures. These sculptures are made of sand and clay, and their mushroom-like shape was formed naturally with the help of wind, sand, and seawater particles. There’s a fence around these rocks to prevent anyone from trying to climb or touch them, but I was still able to view them up close. After enjoying a hearty lunch, I went here because everyone I asked about Bolnuevo would mention this attraction.

It was amazing seeing their unique shapes in person, especially knowing that they became that way purely because of erosion. They are located right in front of Playa de Bolnuevo and are very hard to miss, so I didn’t have to walk far just to see them.

Grab a cup of coffee at La Siesta

Restaurante La Siesta

Restaurante La Siesta is located right on the beach, so I went there for some coffee and dessert after spending the whole day on the beach. Once we entered, we saw some of the desserts displayed in the refrigerator, which made choosing a little bit easier. They also serve starters, salads, meat, fish, and soup, all of which I want to try some day.

For my dessert, I got delicias de canela, which is a type of cake with plenty of cinnamon. Meanwhile, my friends ordered tiramisu and a three-chocolate cake. All of the cakes were delicious, and their cappuccino had sweet whipped cream on top. There were seats inside and outside, and we chose to eat outside. This was the perfect choice because we got to admire the sunset and enjoy the view of the beach.

Take a day trip to Murcia

The city of Murcia is a place that’s always bustling with activity yet isn’t overwhelming. On days when I’m in the mood to socialize, Murcia has clubs and commercial centers. When I feel like sitting back and relaxing, I take a stroll around the city’s parks or enjoy a cup of coffee or wine at one of the restaurants.

Murcia is only 1 hour and 15 minutes from Bolnuevo by bus, so going back and forth between these two places is a piece of cake. After having a good time in the village, at the end of the weekend, I went to Murcia.

More adventures in Bolnuevo

The next time I come to Bolnuevo, I plan to stay longer because I know there are still so many things that I have yet to discover. However, even though I only had a short time to relax, I was still able to make the most out of it. Bolnuevo is the perfect place for a weekend-long vacation. So, to experience the best of it, follow the list above!
