Palawan is known for its beaches and natural landscape, and El Nido and Coron are especially famous to tourists. However, there are other places in Palawan you can explore if you don’t want to go with the crowds. Sabang is a small village in Puerto Princesa City and has yet to be discovered by the mainstream crowd. There are a lot of things you can do in Sabang that you can do in other places, but without deadling with a throng of people.
1. Go on a mangrove forest tour (from USD 63.39)
There is an organization in Sabang that handles the Mangrove Paddleboat Tour and its office can be found at the end of Sabang Beach. The guides for the tour are all locals who have been trained, so you can be rest-assured that the tour will not only interesting but educational, as well. The guides will tell you about the importance of the mangroves and its role in the local ecosystem. While on the tour, you may also see the wildlife living in the mangrove area, especially at low tide. The tour is less than an hour, so you can do it after going to the underground river - if you’re not tired yet.
After the tour, you will be given mangrove saplings which you are encouraged to plant in their planting area. The whole trip is not only educational for the visitors but beneficial to the local community and the environment.

This is another tour you shouldn’t miss, besides exploring the Underground River in Puerto Princesa! You’ll paddle through a mangrove forest that gives an astounding view into the heart of a serene territory. I was lucky enough to be guided by Lady Mangrove, who explained all the history and stories of the mangrove. This made me appreciate the tour even more!

2. Go on a trek on the Jungle Trail
The Jungle Trail is the scenic, longer route to take to the Puerto Princesa Underground River. The Jungle Trail is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long from its starting point to the underground river. The trail takes you through the forest where you can encounter ancient trees, vines, and limestone cliffs and it is mostly composed of uphill trekking. It makes its descent about a kilometer (.6 miles) away from the Underground River. At the end of the trail, giant lizards of about 3 to 4 feet long (.9 to 1.2 meters) may welcome you!

3. See the Sabang Waterfalls
The Sabang Waterfalls are located at a neat little spot near the beach! It is a 20-minute walk from Sabang Port and you can ask any local about it. Before you reach the waterfalls, you will see a small hut where you will need to register. What’s unique about this place, is that the waterfalls are facing the sea. It is over 50 feet (15.2 meters) high, with a rocky pool at the bottom. The falls are a breathtaking sight to begin with, but even more so when you see the view of the beach it provides, as you relax at the naturally-formed pool.

5. Relax and enjoy Sabang Beach
After a day of adventure and thrill-seeking activities, it’s always good to sit down and relax our minds and bodies. Sabang Beach can be likened to Boracay, with its white sand lining the shore. The only difference is that there’s no crowd. Whether it be swimming or just soaking up the sun, Sabang Beach is the perfect place for some down time.
6. Visit the underground river
Going to Palawan? Of course, you must not miss visiting one of the new seven wonders of nature - the Puerto Princesa underground river! The river is 8.2 kilometers (5.1 miles) long, with only 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) open to all visitors. The rest can only be visited when you have a special permit. The river itself is so enormous that some areas are not safe for exploration, due to lack of oxygen, but in the areas you can explore, you will be greeted by mysterious and enchanting rock formations. Recently, scientists discovered that the cave has a second floor, which means that there could be waterfalls inside the cave!
If you’re interested in visiting, there are tours that can guide you through the river.
