Surrounded by the majestic Himalayas, Dharamshala is known for its spectacular outdoor beauty. Dal Lake is undoubtedly on the must-see list, but what can you do there? Let’s find out:

Take in the scenic surroundings

Although small, Dal Lake is spectacular, with Himalayan cedar trees and the rugged mountainous terrain all around. Spring and summer are the best times to stop by the lake in terms of visibility and weather. Don’t forget to bring the camera with you as you’ll surely want to capture the beauty of the area.

Enjoy a boat ride on the lake’s calm waters

While we don’t recommend the lake waters for swimming, they are ideal for boating. Enjoy a romantic and relaxing boat ride on the lake, while you admire the natural beauty that surrounds it, as well as take in the fresh mountain air. Make it an experience that’s hard to forget by packing a picnic basket and enjoying it near the lake.

Visit the Lord Shiva temple

Beyond its striking beauty and outdoor activities, Dal Lake is also an attraction for religious people, as there is a renowned temple sitting on its banks. The sacred temple is of tremendous significance, as it serves Lord Shiva, one of the central deities in the Hindu religion. The place of worship is often visited by pilgrims from all over Himachal Pradesh, coming to pray to the Lord.

Don’t miss the September festival by the lake

Come September, the lake turns into a major visitor attraction. Tourists from all over the world flock to its shores to witness a unique festival. During this month, the banks of the river become the center stage for the Gaddi tribe, as they host a fair to celebrate Lord Shiva. Expect to find numerous food stalls and a variety of attractions and activities here.

Bring your fishing gear with you

The lake is filled with fish, so it makes for the perfect place to start your mornings, with the fishing rod in your hand. You can stay on the shore or rent a boat from the on-site boat ride facility and test your fishing skills. You will, however, need permission from the authorities to go fishing by the lake.

Go trekking

As it is surrounded by rugged hills and forests, the lake is the go-to place for many outdoor adventurers and trekking enthusiasts. The trails vary in difficulty and length, making it ideal for all age groups and training levels.

Best time to visit

Dharamshala is a year-round destination, and so is Dal Lake, as it offers travelers a variety of things to do in every season. However, the best months to visit is September, when local tribal people participate in a festival by the lake, but also between November to January, as the temperatures are moderate and the weather is pleasant.

No swimming in the lake

Keep in mind that swimming in the lake is not allowed, as there are snakes in the water. Other water sports like boating or fishing are permitted.

What to wear

When planning a trip to Dal Lake, the first thing to keep in mind is packing comfortable, versatile clothes. One of the essentials that shouldn’t miss from your bag is a pair of cozy hiking shoes, as you’ll probably want to explore the forested and hilly surroundings. It might be best to bring a few layers because even if the weather is pleasant during the day, it gets pretty cold in the evening and at night.
