A self-governing monastery located in St. Nazianz, Holy Resurrection Monastery is a Byzantine monastery that is a community dedicated to prayer, fasting, and generosity to the poor. Founded in 1995, the monastery was opened with Bishop George Kuzma’s blessing, and he is part of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Van Nuys. The institution was transferred in 2005 at the monk’s request to the Romanian Catholic Church. The monastery follows traditional Eastern Orthodox monasticism and the fasting and liturgical regulations of the Byzantine tradition.

Holy Wisdom Monastery has a long and beautiful history that dates back to the mid-19th century. Its origin can be traced to a Benedictine community of women in Maria-Rickenbach, Switzerland, who came to America and founded a community dedicated to helping a growing number of immigrants. Aside from the beautiful architecture, the monastery also offers cozy meeting rooms that can fit 4 to 300 people, and allows its occupants to discuss topics at hand without distractions. 3. Valley of Our Lady Monastery

Founded in 1956, Valley of Our Lady Monastery houses the Cistercian nuns, and the Order of Citeaux is one of the church’s ancient monastic orders. Cistercian monasticism is sourced from Sacred Scriptures, the Desert Fathers’ traditions, Rule of St. Benedict, and the passing on of traditions to succeeding groups of monks and nuns. Daily life in the monastery includes alternating between Divine Office prayed in Latin with Gregorian chant, community solitude, and unceasing conversion. These are means by which the monastery hopes to integrate purity, tranquility, and an unending union with God.

4. Saint John Chrysostomos Greek Orthodox Monastery

Situated in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, Saint John Chrysostomos Greek Orthodox Monastery is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Metropolis of Chicago. A monastery for nuns, it is one of the 18 monasteries in the country founded by Archimandrite Ephraim in 1994. The monastery is famous for its exquisite production of religious works of art, such as ornaments and plates. The property features a 9,000-square-foot (836 sq m) Byzantine church, which makes it an ultimate destination for pilgrims.

5. Carmelite Monastery

Founded in 1963, Carmelite Monastery has a chapel located in the former dining and living room area of the property. It was renovated in 1969 according to liturgical norms, and again in 1990, when some existing walls were removed to open up for new spaces and to create a lighter and simpler atmosphere. The monastery is supported by charity and taken care of by the generosity of friends and family. In 1978, four rooms were constructed and made into workstations. In 1985, a spacious workroom was built in addition to the other room, to help the nuns support themselves. The monastery also has a greenhouse installed that enables the Carmelite sisters to grow their own produce of flowers and vegetables.
